Article Review from Toy Famer Column "Focus"

This article begins with the discussion of about early Ertl and  a couple "controversay's" that developed out of the designing of some of the Massey Fergusons of the 1960's and early 73.  One of those so called "controversary's" was some of the early implements and combines came with yellow rims and some implement kits had both yellow and gray rims.  In Ertl 1973 catalog they showed the MF 860 with yellow wheels.  Another interesting note about this release was it had the square intake grille whereas many of Ertl other combines had round intake grilles.......I dont have a picture to show you maybe Marky does.  Later on in the late 70's Ertl did another 760 with the round intake grille. Also later in the 70's they switch to Gray rims on the 760.......

I guess it would be Massey lover dream to own a few of these combines and implements......

that's interesting Pops.. I wasn't aware there were other variants available... I have the 760 yellow wheel... the 760 silver wheel... and an 850 (not 860)...

My camera is at work.. but I'll see if I can get my son's camera working to get some pics for you... be right back  :)

right then... this model is one of my favourite models EVER... I just love it's chunky 'playability' .. a real good old sandpit toy.  I had the yellow wheel version as a kid.. and I can remember that it wasn't cheap.. I had to practically beg mum and dad for it  :D :D

So... first up... the first version I also had as a kid.. the yellow wheeled 760...

Note the square engine air intake...

Now the later 760... silver wheels.. and note the round engine air intake... and silver roof

and finally... this once came with a maize head or corn head... 850 with square intake... bigger tyres too

Maybe I should try to contact the writer of the article and ask why two 800 series combines???  seems odd to me considering the year....I could understand that now with a tractor but not then with a combine......interesting mystery.....I left my farm toy book north so dont have that for a reference.........

>:(:D :D :D  - I'd nearly got it loaded on eBay before I read the bottom of the post  :'( :-[:D :D

Strange that they did the smaller model... it's a bit like making a doll of your favourite FTF'er... you wouldn't make a doll of... say... Rick or Barry when you could make a doll of someone dashingly handsome... say.... like me  ;D:-*

Well i finally got a hold of the writer he lives 3000 miles east of me in NY.....We talked about the article and mentioned that Marky and I were discussing the 860 vs the 850 version and what was the difference...Well Doug said the only difference is that the 850 came out with two heads........also told me there are still some 800 series to be found at the national shows and maybe some 760s but they are much harder to find.....If my health was better I would love to go see the National Show.......Marky probably have me in divorce court within a month since he would want every old Massey on the block......Doug did say that in the next issue he will cover the 850....too bad you all dont have a little access to this magazine it always has something interesting...I prefer 1/32 myself but I subscribe to keep me posted on stuff I can use in Model Farmer...

if you had the 860 you would pretty much a complete set of the 800 series even though there may be a few different releases I am not sure....one would need an old catalog to find out....but Kate has a program where she will go to the National shows find the item pick it up and work the deal.....but I am sure it is going to cost a bit for that but at least you wont get hung out to dry ::)
