Oakley Farms
Harvest Log Day 5 Back on combining Rape today up at Kingstone after a few days pause from wet weather. 70 acres cleared from 17.00 tonight in snotty little fields, into the bigger ones tomorrow all being well. The wet weather may have held the combines and trailers to the yard but it didn't hamper progress yesterday with both Challengers out, one direct drilling cover crop into the barley stubble at Brympton now that all the bales are chased to the headlands and the other pulling down rape stubble opposite the yard in the Meads with the RLM and Carrier, Dan was ahead in an 828 topping down. So just for you BOR are some pics of the CTF trains

Niels
Looking lovely as usual Alex. However, some moaning from me; With discing speed is the key. Doesn't the tramline subsoiler slow you down or cause excessive wear running at a VERY high speed? How deep are you pulling the tramlines up? 0025
I was at my Uncle Alecs far where they are fairly big arable farmers but also store grain/stock food in there big shed in one there was beef nuts stacked 25ft high with like a silage clamp face in there yard they had 2 brand new jcb loadals a Claas tucano 440 t4i (not t4f) and also they had a brand new lexion 760tt on loan from some contractors. just thought I would share this interesting info with you southern Jessie's! Pulling it out of work on tramlines but in at 9in for the 12m runs in between, not slow with 600hp on the front but too early to say about excessive wear but with only 4 legs its not a massive cost. This is an example, a Joker but not a Carrier mind but same principle http://youtu.be/nsd_PNRrkwU
Tractorman810
I take it you farm old airfields with the runways intact to run them rigs arround alex would hate to meet anything on the roads dragging that drill behind ,
Oakley Farms
We are quite lucky where we farm here in Somerset, most of the land is up through the A303 corridor so good transport links are possible. However this restricts us as to where we can farm, we tend not to stray very far from major A roads. I say lucky in our position because most of Somerset consists of small narrow lanes, up where Julian farms is a good example, this is completely inaccessible for our main arable operations. The 600 hp probably hardly notices.

Oakley Farms
Harvest Log Days 6-10 Still on OSR and things progressing well, kingstone was finished and saw us move up to the 500 acre block at Bondip for 2 and a half days and now we are accross in North Petherton cutting DK Expower at James Broughton's land next to the M5. Should finish up here today and then back home to Blackdown for the final block of Rape, possibly a few days break before wheat is ready but that will give us chance to catch up with cultivations and book some spreaders in for chicken litter.

Oakley Farms
Harvest Log Day 11 No combining so far today as its a bit showery, might crack on later this afternoon. Meanwhile Mark is topping down rape stubble and the rest of the boys are carting back rape from North Petherton, this is working well so far to get this back across the weigh bridge before we start the next block. Phil is managing to get a blight spray on which has been slightly neglected lately, 10 days since the last application, we have also applied glyphosate to some of the wheat to bring harvest forward a little and tidy up any weeds before direct drilling rape. Oakley Farms
Afraid not Dave, they are temporary ones until i can get some 1/32 ones. I have to be careful taking pics because of the difference in scale but they are nice looking with enough detail and modern spec too so they will to for the time being! I spied a case combine in your yard, how are you finding it? How is harvest going at Hawthone, nearly finished rape here.
Stabliofarmer
What do the drivers prefer then, the Merc or the Volvo? The Merc just pulls ahead in the looks department for me but I've heard good reviews about both vehicles.
Oakley Farms
Well thats a touchy subject James, Marshy and Ross are volvo through and through where as Neil is a DAF man, for me it has to be our flagship, the fh16 750 seen tipping in the pit. Oakley Farms
The last few days has seen all the rape finished off and we are progressing well with topping and cultivations, Kingstone is now worked, North Petherton has had a good heave up with the subsoiler and Blackdown has had a much needed cover crop direct drilled into it. Topping continues up at Bondip and we shall send the Carrier up there possibly tomorrow. With the showery weather Mark and Tom have started to lift some irrigation pipes and lay flats as we will soon think about digging some Shepody! Oakley Farms
Today cultivations are continuing as well as newly sown cover crops having a roll to consolidate whilst im looking at taking side knives off the headers and converting for wheat
