Scottish working day events circa 1987

Over the past week I have been scanning quite a lot of my old 35 mm SLR negatives and found a few working day events at Deeside Banchory and Scone Palace Perth and I'm guessing the photos were taken around 1986.

First Scone Palace ...probably the first time I had seen a push pull outfit. Does anyone know when the Fendt 311 LSA was issued

The Barracks were down from Aberdeen with Sam Hird their ploughing engine and plough. They do not have a pair of engines so Ian Beverley from Cupar Angus pulled it back with one of his many CAT's

Not often I have seen a team of Clydesdale on a binder....these trio look rather frisky but that is probably do to the crowd of people and or the lack of being worked

Next to the Banchory area and Sandy McCain and Ian Law attempting to plough with a trailing plough at a Deeside Club plouging day event with Ian's then 1948 Fordson E27N.

Next the Ernie and Mike Muller having a thrash with their Foster engine and mill. I's sure the engine was sold to Ireland. The Threshing Mill was sold to a farmer Ernie Leith of Deystone Kintore and after Ernie died it was brought by local Aberdeen steam enthusiast Mike Dreelan from Blair's just across the valley from me.

Nice pictures Bill. Old photographs always store well if kept as negatives.

The first 311's (LS) were launched in 1984. Then there was a second range from 1987 onwards and a third from 1990 onwards. Then in 1993 came the final range.

It could well be Joe I only recall where the engine and mill went. Father and some Ernie and Mike Muller owned Mulco Enginering in Aberdeen and initially made bakery ovens etc when I think Ernie's father came across from Germany before they diversified into ships repairs. Both were keen on the steam engines but Mike the son never settled long at anything...first steam engines...then motor cycles, then cars... then Scammell's...the he wanted a helicopter but he was colour blind so he could not get a pilots license. Lets say Mike was a fine chap but of a bit of a "play boy" when it came to machines. He even retired and sold out his share of the business when he was barely over 50 and moved out to New Byth whilst his 80 year old father Ernie carried on the business with a new shareholder.

Any idea who now owns that baler Joe

Thanks Niel's I have an abundance of 35 MM SLR negatives and bought a 35mm scanner a year or so back with the intention of getting then all scanned. All good intentions in theory and although I did a few when I first got it it was laid aside until last week. I'm going to a DMR event in Cupar Scotland in less than 4 weeks time and taking 4 of my  1/16 scale SpecCast Farmall Cubs, 20 odd David Brown operators and instruction manuals etc for tractors and implements and I decided as well to get some folders with pictures of my own 3 Farmall's plus other folks Farmalls & Internationals, David Brown's and Cases. Sometime ones needs a extra push to get things done. ;D  ;D

It looks as if they were demonstrating that Fendt so I suspect it was not 1986 but in fact 1987 ...and early September to be more precise 8)

Yes it was to be at the airfield at Scone Harry but there were issue with space. Good to see its going ahead again and that is a free weekend for me on the rally scene so I'll have a look down as a spectator.

I think the last I heard Mikes engine count was 19 but he may have exceed that by now. I would say £ 250k was a conservative estimate.....his Showman's engine Dolphin alone would be worth more than that I would imagine. I must get photos scanned of a working weekend held at his place some years ago.

I would image they will have Harry since relatively close to home from them. They are up in Aberdeen to three rallies and for the past two years  have taken their ploughing engine up to the BA Stores Working weekend at Lyne of Skene and paired it up with the Barracks one. I think this is the only time I have seen a pair ploughing in Scotland although I have seem pairs working at the Great Dorset Steam Fair when I attended twice in the 80's and 90's

I think 19 is probably about right. Me and my dad were talking to him at GDSF last year and he's a really nice fella and willing to chat about his stuff. Ah yeah dolphins worth a pretty penny and with the new paint job she's had she's probably worth over £300k at least. Then its the same with Goliath one of his other showman's engines and the only McLaren one in the world. My dad was lucky enough to drive both of them when they were owned by Frank Lythgote who Mike brought them from along with a few more of his engines. I believe Frank now collects vintage tractors instead of traction engines.

James...Mike is a nice chap and very down to earth and calls a spade a spade. He also has a collection of tractors and lorries as well but his main passion is steam including a steam car. I remember being at an open day at his place a few years ago and I think I still have an unfinished spool of film in an SLR camera...which reminds me I must finish that get developed  and scan the photos to disc.
