richo
A friend of mine who has recently moved to Devon would like to buy a tractor to use around his property and horse paddocks. He has been looking at David Browns 885 and 995/ 996 which I have said are not bad old tractors but he does not seem to be able to find a reasonably priced example. He has seen a Ford 4600 for sale and asked me what they are like, I don't have a lot of knowledge about the older Fords. Can people give their opinion and what is good and bad about these tractors. Am I right in thinking that the engines fitted to these tractors were ok and it was only the later 10 series tractors that had trouble with porous blocks? Thanks in advance. Fendt Fahrer
I would be a 4600 any time.
justy 46
The 46 is a great little tractor. Porous blocks were more common in the 4cyls more so over the 3 cyls. The 4600 is a very economical on fuel ,but packs plenty of power in the 3.3 L 3cyl unit at 62HP which is on a par with the 4cyl DB 995 & 996. It was Fords little pocket rocket of the 70's. We had one for years on our own farm along with a 4000 & my father swears by them. It never gave trouble as long as I can remember. The 4610 is much the same tractor but knocks out a little more power at 64 HP. The only thing is they can be a bit pricy for a good example compared to the other rival tractors in their power bracket from the same era . Especially the 4610. But they are pricy for a reason , cause your buying a good little tractor.
