Rapeseed drill project

Recommended Posts

For the last few years my rapeseed drill on the carpet farm has been a simba solo with a Dave Towse culti press/ variocast seeder attached to it,   this is a long and clumsy rig on the diorama and requires 300hp up front in real life conditions.

These days most farmers seem to have gone for a Sumo Trio or Cousins Patriot paired up with a seed caster, but no one makes either of these and up until recently I was unaware that anything similar had been made by anyone.

Then whilst scouring the G&M farm models gallery I spotted something Id missed,  namely the Tulip multidisc  from UH :)

I especially like the retracting subsoiler legs and looking at the real size machines specs its clear that its a direct competitor to the Patriot and Trio and requires 150- 300hp depending on cultivation depth and soil type.

So with the ideal tool for a new rapeseeder I set to work , firstly out came the paint brushes to give the model an used appearance and in order to achieve this I bought some new Revell "Steel" paint  which is so good Im now repainting all my previously silver painted implements........in case you guys want a pot of it the number is 91

Heres pictures of the finished painted model.

Last picture of the day shows the old Simba rig with its broadcaster and the new Multidisc implement in front, the idea is to transplant the seeder from the old rig onto the new.

The first job was to create a simple platform made from a plastic packer and position beneath where the seeder will be fixed.

Really like that Phil, especially the used look. What tractor will it be used on? The bloke who drills our rape has a JD 8420 to pull a 3m sumo.

Like the simba press a lot too

our neighbour has a 2.5 metre and that makes his 6830 pull hard even when the legs aren't particularly deep

We have proper mans land though, it's all heavy. In all fairness they did use to pull it with a 7920 but that was on it's knees a lot of the time.

Our single leg mole plough at 20in is enough work for the 6920S

It must be though we used to pull our single leg mole plough closer to 30in with our Ford 7810

Thanks for the comments lads and Ive pretty much completed it today.

I took apart the old Simba rig and glued it onto the multidisc, reduced the yellow pipes to 6 and aligned each of them to the positions of the six subsoiler legs.

Used some red paint to hide the glued on parts and its looking half decent.

The last picture is of one of my local farms JD8360R and 3m Cousins Patriot on some very wet March fen land, which it was really struggling on............................yesterday however I saw the same piece of kit on the same farms new 6210R which was zipping along, so its obviously soil conditions that dictate the choice of tractor..........................................I will be paring mine with a new 200+hp tractor suitable for most conditions but it may have to step aside on the deep shagpile carpet and allow a 300hp unit to takeover ;D

Im currently fine tuning the new tractor with aerials and weights and using similar locally used machines as my inspiration....................It will of course debut on FTF  probably next weekend. :)

Nice use of one of my seeders, I'd been meaning to look at fitting one on a Multidisc when I got a minute, certainly look the part on them.

The Cultipress conversion may have been a DT but the Opico seeder is definitely one of the ones that I produced.

Its been a very straightforward convo and I do think the Multidisc went under the radar when it was released but its definitely worth doing this kind of rapeseed convo on if anyone else is considering it and its saved lots of room on the diorama farmyard  as well :)

blimey, i doubt that will be much of a crop after that jd has finished, most of the fields going to back in the yard with the tractor its that wet

tidy conversion phil, certainly didnt miss the tulip, but would never have thought of adding that to it i must say

Just found this Phil, I'm pretty sure the tulip is sold by teagle in the uk.

That's correct, it was also featured in Aprils issue of Profi :) http://www.profi.com/issues/heftausgabe_archiv_908744.html

Nice work Phil, liking this convo :)

You wouldn't believe it but Ive got that issue of Profi sat 3 feet away from me and I didn't even realise the Multidisc was featured in it :-[  anyways it seems that Profi liked it and they explain why the machine has discs set in front of the legs unlike all the other designs out there...........................180hp is the minimum requirement so say Profi and theres a Fendt 724 up front on their test so my decision to put a similar powered New Holland (sorry mf590) model on mine is validated ^-^

Smart convo there Phi, I do like that.

Spose the tulip could be a good source of discs, legs and packer roller to scratchbuild a sumo from.

I did think about that myself, you would have all the parts for a trio and it looks much the same colour red frame,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,actually looking in the Sumo dealers yard yesterday there were three new Sumo subsoilers which just have 6 legs and the packer with no discs so even easier to scratchbuild you would think.
