Resin Casting

HS.

Question

I was just wondering if anyone knew how easy it is to make the moulds and cast the resin, I'm planning on casting a load of tyres for a couple of future conversions I have planned, I was also wondering of there's any kits or what I need to do the casting

Any Help much appreciated, Harry

Overall its not that expensive or hard and is certainly cheaper than buying lots of models just for wheels. I made a guide for the moria forum so might as well put it up here. Never got round to showing casting with the resin just the mould making. I'll try and get the casting part soon

Heres the guide

The first part is making the mould to do this I use RTV Silicone. Here's a web link to it http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Polycraft-GP-3481-F-RTV-Silicone-Mould-Mold-Making-Rubber-Kit-Shore-A27-/221175561830?pt=UK_Crafts_Other_Crafts_EH&var=&hash=item337f173e66. The mould I'm making is one part instead of two.
What you'll need:

  • RTV Silicone
  • Parts to mould
  • Release agent/spray.
  • Scales
  • Plastercine
  • Disposable Cups
  • Stirrer
  • Rubber Gloves
  • Card
  • Sellotape

Begin by making a liquid tight box for your part to sit in. It must be large enough and high enough to fit your part in.

To work out how much resin to make put your part in the box and fill the remaining space with rice.

Pour all the rice into a cup and mark were it goes up to on the side. This is the amount of silicone you need to make. In this case it was just up to the bump in the cup.

Now take your parts and place some plasticine on it so that it has a raised flat side.

Now sit the parts with the flat side down in the box you made

Spray release agent on them

Now your ready to make up the mould. It comes as a gooey liquid and a red catalyst.

Place the cup on the scales and put it to zero.
100_0842_zps22afbb1d.jpg
Now pour in your silicone till it reaches your mark. Then read of the weight, in this case 101 grams

Now dived that by 10. 100 divided by 10=10. Therefore I need to add 10 grams of catalyst

Now thoroughly mix the silicone till it goes pink

Give it a minute for the air bubbles to rise to the surface.
Now pour the silicone over your parts so that there totally covered.

Leave to set for about 24 hours. Then you can remove the parts from the mould. There now ready to use.

Hope this helps and sorry its over more than one posts but theres the picture limit. Overall like I said its not to hard and its cheaper than buying donor models. Ill try to make a casting part ASAP.

Cheers James, its something I've planned on doing for a while but didn't have the technical know how to do so, seem simple and had a look on amazon and there's a few starter kits so plan on purchasing one to see how it goes

Thanks harry

Go for it :) Its quite fun and useful and considering how simple it is its really hard to find information on what and how to use it so took abit of trial and error for me to find out. This is a very good how to video that someone has made

you need more info :D
