tractorboyjules1977
finally somthing going in the ground ,today we made a start on drilling 100 acres of spring beans ,so far so good and ground pitching off quite well , the fertiliser spreader also went on today managing to put on some p& k on the wheats , with hopefully a little tickle of nitrogen later in the month .Yesterday the sprayer was all hitched on ready to get on with sorting out some winter stubbles early next week ,Good to see the machines out of the yard at last and not a sole back at base !!

tractorboyjules1977
With the majority of the ploughing now under our belts and the spring beans all safely in the ground our attention for this week is to get the workshop up together ready for the spring to properly kick in . 1st job this morning was to go down to Cox's and pick our 2 new valtras a t174 & t194 both will be initially with us on a 6 month lease hire contract and from there onwards the opportunity to extend the lease or change depending on circumstances or if they get recalled before , initially we will be aiming for around 1000 hours before change . 1st jobs for the newbies 700 acres of grass to be harrowed and then on with the flat rollers ease em in gently and get the operators fully engaged with there new surroundings ! At the dairy yard the 1st cubicle house has been finished and the 2 robotic milkers are in ,so far so good just a matter of getting the girls used to the new technology and new ideas of split paddock grazing ,ie were implementing a 8 hour grazing system over 3 paddocks during a 24 hour period so no 1cow will be in the same paddock for a maximum time period , principals are good on paper and stats anyway !

tractorboyjules1977
Rain certainly stopped play in south Somerset over the last 24 hours ! Not too much going on this wknd just a few load of potatoe boxes being brought back from branstons and hauling a few loads of stock potatoes back for the beef cattle . in the workshop our attention starting to think towards spring planting , 1st job on the agenda get the 7430 in for a change to row crops ,this will be swiftly followed by the 724 & 818 preparing for potato planting .machines due in at the start of the week for there prep work , looks like the weather unsettled for the week so workshop and slurry duties top of the list !
tractorboyjules1977
Little update now the weather settled down a bit , 1st jobs of of the week booked in 95 acres of ploughing with the 724 over chard for Churchill's . then off to Madges to turn over another 55 acres .also sent the 818 over with the multidiscs on to crack on in front of the plough and then to follow over recently turned ground to get a bit of air in the soil ,try and dry some of the heavier ground out a bit .then the usual weekly jobs loading the slurry tanker from the dairy ,spreading on recently fed sheep keep grounds ! Let's hope this weather lasts !!

tractorboyjules1977
1st update for a while , with all slurry operations now finished until 1st cut silage is underway , attention now turned to potato planting , yesterday saw the preparations underway with the tiller , ridgers & destoner all making headway over Hinton park with 50 acres due to go in , following on down to Green farm with another 25 acres , hope to start planting sometime today / tomorrow . so far so good when operations closed down for the night last night with the dust settling down as the sun went down ! Gonna be a busy few weeks ahead as getting ready to start maize drilling early next week , after deciding to hang on until ground temperature was at its maximum . just a mere 600 acres of our own to drill , then off to different customers and for the AD Plant ! Should be totaling more than 1700 acres by the time the last seed drops in the ground , not including more potential drilling !! Silage wise we are still around 10 days or so , just waiting on sugar levels to rise for optimum results . looks like we're be pushed on the tractor front so plans are at foot for bidding in some much extra help .
