Popular Post Valley Axe Man
A bit more "blue".... A few hours on a Good Friday up at the shed, mudguards given a light sanding and then a second coat, cab frame given a light sanding and then given a second coat, then front axle casing top coated and underside of chassis rails given a coat. Once painted I set about in the warm Lancashire weather sanding bonnet down....... Hopefully get another shift in over weekend to push the project on a bit more... Then all being well I should have the replacement wiring loom on Tuesday 👍
Popular Post Valley Axe Man
Another update after a few hours with Gemma yesterday up at the yard, mudguards refitted with new sealing strips between cab and mudguards before getting bolted up, rear wheels re fitted, they took a bit of wrestling with to get the spigotted nuts lined up over the studs, but glad Gemma was there to help get the wheels back on.... bloody heavy lumps they are...... pick up hitch frame removed for a bit of work to the pivots and also the hitch latch area, as well as a clean and paint, which will also include hydraulic tombstone at back end before refitting the hitch, and front wheels now off for a coat of silver... Valley Axe Man
An early start for a training course this morning.... But meant an early finish so duly meant it gave me an hour spare to pull the old loom out of the 472.....new one ready to refit over the weekend
Valley Axe Man
Dropped by the yard for a couple of hours this afternoon, and just had to do a little experiment, seeing as she had been laid up a long time before I got my hands on her, I wondered if the engine had suffered any so I balance a washer on her rocker cover whilst she running... Goes to show a 4/98 thats done a shade over 5000 hours on the clock and been looked after still runs smooth, guess Leyland knew what they were doing with the 5 main bearing crank and the use of balancer gears.... 👌👍 VID_20220423_135205.mp4

Valley Axe Man
Bit more done this weekend, new loom pulled in, but dash loom and overhead switch panel loom need a bit of repair in places, good news is wiper motor is still free and runs nice, so once the loom repaired up top that's a job off the list, spools were thought to be seized but removed them and they both free both ways, further investigation found linkage is seized up so that's on the list to fettle.... Front hubs and swivels cleaned off primed and top coated as with the underside of the trumpets and the underside of the back end.... Finally the rear side windows were dropped back in to check fit after all the work the cab has had done. VID_20220424_105208.mp4

Keep up the good work. 👍🏻 Cheers Justin yes she's a good un 👍 just that reputation about them of bad build quality, vague steering band even vaguer brakes, but yet the steering and brakes are as good as any other make if looked after and adjusted properly, yes wet brakes with the harvest gold's were a massive improvement over the dry brakes in the blue ones but the dry ones can be good if you just keep on top of them with the adjusting spanner. Too many looked down on Leylands as a poor man's tractor....
Valley Axe Man
Managed a few hours up at the shed yesterday afternoon, progress been a bit slow of late with last weekend trip up north and not much free time during the week but anyhow quadrant housing cross shaft removed and the seized spool levers removed after being left soaked in a bit of diesel for a fortnight.... Old remains of levers ground off and new bent up and welded back on, made with removable upper sections to make it easier on refit once back on the tractor.... After early concerns that the spool block it self was seized it's turned out to be a cheap fix, a quick check with a pressure guage on the block and the spool piped into shunter at work gave a pressure relief valve setting of 2400psi so I'm happy at that, a little lower than the 2500psi stated in the figures of the workshop manual but close enough for me and it's intended future.... Hopefully manage a couple more hours this weekend but really need a shopping trip to procure some more parts ....
Valley Axe Man
Managed another few hours up at the shed with Gemma this afternoon, front wheels top coated, floor refit and new rivnuts fitted to bolt them down, steps refit and top coated, hydraulic casting given a dose of dark blue at the same time, Gemma then made up a pair of replacement linkages for the quadrant after deciding the old ones had been codged up a few times, so out with a bit of 5mm round bar and the die nut. Then seeing as the sun was shining she had the 465 out for a couple of laps of the yard whilst I pulled the pick up hitch in bits for a bit of fettling on the pivots and hitch latch.... Valley Axe Man
Managed a couple of hours up at the yard this dinner time, got the pick up hitch frame cleaned up and painted after making a fresh pair of pivot pins to sit between the frames, but further work is needed on the latch for the hitch lock as the lever is snapped off the latch pivot pin and possibly the latch fork needs building up with a bit more weld.... But anyhow that'll be for another visit, steering pipes removed where the outer coating has cracked over time and exposed the steel reinforcement, not necessarily a problem at present but could be in the future so the best prevention of a future burst hose is replacement, not too much of an issue as I can make my own replacement hoses at work and the bonus is the fittings aren't anything fancy just standard 60 cone BSP thread.... So that be dinner times job this next few days. And just before headed home I threw the front wheels back on, just to get them out of the road for now
Valley Axe Man
New steering hoses made and crimped up yesterday dinner time.... Next job be to get them wrapped in spira-band to give them a bit more protection, before refitting and bleeding up the steering... It's handy being agents for Pirtek... No shortage at work for pipe and fittings
Valley Axe Man
Couple of hours up at the yard with Gemma tonight giving the 804 a bath and the 465 a wipe over with an oily rag ready for weekend and our local rally....
Valley Axe Man
First time I've managed a few hours up the yard in almost a month with one thing and another, anyhows another section of loom sourced after Gemma did quite a bit of web ferriting to track one down, one of the plugs is to change to match up to bit of loom it plugs into but nowt that can't be sorted with a handful of non insulated terminals and the ratchet crimpers, also a few bits pillaged from Charnleys yesterday, and a quick chat with John JMD eldest son Matt who said he's been doing a bit more work on my old 802 in preparation for a local show in roughly a fortnight's time... Anyhows the new 3/8" hydraulic steering pipes that I made a few weeks back were wrapped in armour flex, and then been refit, strapped up and then the steering reservoir refilled and engine frapped up and steering bled of air, new throttle cable fitted to the now unseized throttle linkage and duly fitted with a new return spring, new adjusting nuts fitted to the brake expanders, both spun up and backed off half a turn to allow the linings to bed in, before work commences on the rest of the wiring, I had her out for a lap of the yard, and a couple of photos, first time out since she was put in the workshop on the 29th of December last year, still a ways to go before she's finished but can now see a bit of progress... received_1088400418743136.mp4 Edited June 18, 2022 by Valley Axe Man
Valley Axe Man
A bit more done today, flying solo again at present, but got bonnet sanded off and first coat of blue on as well as using last bit of tin up on the two front light brackets, whilst paint drying off I set about abit more if the re wire, new Lucas switch fitted in dash and a modified Landrover series 3 indicator stalk fitted and wired in to loom, not a lot left to do before dash and clocks can go back in, just the tacho cable and drive to fit and a couple of fuses, but for all the progress forward a step back in the form of an accident with the plastic upper switch panel, I'm putting it down to age related brittleness of the plastic but she cracked and split into a few pieces when stripping out the old switch gear and old single speaker for the radio.... Replacement genuine panels are available, Charnleys have them new old stock so it won't take much to find one, but unfortunately another expense that wasn't planned for......
Valley Axe Man
Spent a couple of hours parts shopping yesterday.... Was good to catch up with Roger for a brew and a rummage about his shed, Unfortunately didn't get all of the bits that I was looking for for the 472, but did source some better cab glass and also a few other bits and bobs including a pair of new old stock front indicator/side lights, and a new old stock left hand front track rod for the 465.... Just need to bob back and pay and collect them, handy though as not be more than 6 miles from home... Won't hold it against Roger though as he's a number of David Brown sat in his shed but they flanked by a tidy Marshall and a trio of blue Leylands, will have to ask him if there's chance of a photo or three when I go back to collect my treasure
