Historical Britains catalogues

Hopefully this isn’t breaching any 30-year-old copyrights. While SPN’s idea to clear your workbench during the current situation is a great one, there’s also time to reflect and I thought that this thread could tick that box.

The 1990s was actually an awful decade for Britians, with no new tractors in the 1993 catalogue if I remember correctly. The signs of the downturn could be seen here in this A4 1990 trade catalogue as the Deutz 6.50 and the Lamborghini used the Ford TW chassis as a cost-saving measure, meaning a bonnet that was too long. As pointed out by the late, great Warner Hall, the MF2680 chassis would have been a far better option.

One innovation was front linkage, albeit with the whole rear hitch transferred, including the drawbar. It was the last year of Power Farm and also the Road Series, I think.

As a catalogue, though, I love the artwork on the cover and inside, presenting quintessential English countryside. Presumably David Pullen is a fan too as the right half graced the cover of his 1948-98 book!

I have a few of these trade and customer catalogues from the 1940's through to 2019 customer. The latter trade ones seem to be very hard to come by. Incidentally they stopped producing trade catalogues from 1965 to 1971 inclusive, instead offering a trade wrapper/supplement to the small customer catalogues.P1120799(1).thumb.JPG.63e50580463760265296ba4a95c54f97.JPG

1964 also saw the small customer flyer, between A5 an A4 in size. there were four of these for Farm, Garden, Zoo and everything else. The last of which showed the yellow industrial Super Major and Shawnie Poole trailer. There are several versions of this flyer in the garden and zoo ranges

I have good few of them her is a 1980 one

You’re ahead of me Trigger, I was going to post a 1980 A4 leaflet I have! Will go with this pocket-sized leaflet from 1983 instead.

It’s interesting to note that there were no properly new tractors, just a couple now available with the new snow plough - note the warning that it wasn’t compatible with the MB-Trac.

I still remember getting the first farm toys when I was about 7 or 8 I think (halfway the '80s). I had to share with my younger brother and sister, but we got (and thankfully still get) along fine. ;) But the greatest joy must have been getting a new catalogue from the toy store. Thankfully my parents regularly took us there to buy some new (Britains) toys, looking at these old catalogues (I have all since 1979 and a few earlier ones) brings back childhood dreams! That has to be the main reason why I still so much enjoy these Britains models today.

My familiy travelled to Southern England to Weymouth in 1996 on holidays...I was a teenager then and had lost all intrest in carpet farming as you do when you hit that age .I was more into SNES gaming, heavy metal music then off course.:D .but my 2 younger brothers were well into carpet farming and I kinda guided them on building up their little fleet.  We were thinking we could snap up the (to be realised ) Britains NH tractors there at the time (around mid July of 96) because they would be available in the UK before Ireland ...but we had no such luck. Ended up coming home with Ertl Genesis Ford 8670 & G240 tractors and 2 Siku Claas twin axle silage trailers. We were well happy with them considering Siku and Ertl stuff was hard to get in Ireland then. The Britains NHs were always going to arrive in Ireland anyway at some stage. ..and they did a few months later.

To be honest Justin i'd forgot i put those in for you......was that long ago.....when man was free to roam and nip down the pub for a quick pint :D  there's something in a box somewhere to send over sometime when i find it again... it eludes me right now but as i'm still sorting stuff out i'm sure i'll find it, being off work isnt ideal but gives me chance to sort through all the stuff here most of the 32nd stuff is hiding behind boxes of 16th stuff.....and maybe when i'm done i'll get a couple of those cabinets ;)

Yeah..The Good ol days Paul..:D. Cabin fever is truly setting in and I could qualify for a degree after all the home schooling im doing with my 2 daughter's. Heck I would have left the cabinets be for a while if I'd known these very unusual times were coming . I could have sorted them now instead. like yourself ...just looking for things to do. There will be one hell off a party when we get out the other side off this. ;)
