stevejack Posted November 17, 2020 Posted November 17, 2020 Hi All, I am in the process of weathering some of my diecast tractors. The first is a Universal Hobbies 1:16 Nuffield Universal Four DM - 1958. I use oil paints for the general grime and detailing, acrylics applied with a sponge for the rust chipping on the panels, pigment powders for the dirt and rust build up, and a little Mig fresh engine oil in specific areas to complete the effect. And here is what it looked like before the weathering, when it was just out of the box:
mb86 Posted November 18, 2020 Posted November 18, 2020 Very nicely done. Not over the top like some you see.

Thanks Martin, it's a bit of a delicate balance - I usually find that what looks over the top in photos actually looks great in person and vice versa. With this one it looks pretty good in photos but in the cabinet it's hard to see that anything has been done at all unless you're really close up to it. Hard to strike the right balance!
alf aphid Posted December 10, 2020 Posted December 10, 2020 Only just seen this, that is absolutely delightful, one of the best patinations I’ve seen

timf Posted December 31, 2020 Posted December 31, 2020 Stevejack, that is quite the best patination I have ever seen. I have an eye for where the real things wear and you have got it 100%. As they age they get character and you have totally got it. I run a full size 1958 Dexta that Dad bought new which has had a good repaint about 30 years ago but is just getting a patina back - she's not used much and sits in a cartshed for logging etc... Have you done a similar exercise on one? Or a 1:16 Major?

I've only done this one so far, and a John Deere model A where I was just testing the effects and learning how to weather them. I do have a couple of Allis Chalmers tractors which are the same models my grandfather owned. I've taken some photos of the tractors in the shed and plan to pay homage to them in 1:16 scale.
