  1. Sorry Aaron, Didn't reply to your first post in the negative as may have been thought, guessed what you really wanted to know and you've had some good replies. Type of welding masks and helmets will suit different people and the type of welding they intend doing, either in their job or as part of a hobby. Heavy industrial welding requires a full helmet where when you're getting up close to your work, lets say shipbuilding, large hot stuff is going to fly and you need full head protection whereas if you're doing light welding then a basic hand mask might be good enough and then there are different grades of darkening in the glass and for that matter, for heat and 'spatter' purposes different grades of glass. The concensus however seems to lean in favour of the type of helmet mask with battery operated graduating darkening glass. Hope that the replies up to now have helped you in making your choice.
thanks mate that's a real help thanks I need an all round mask as I'm doing all kinds of welding thanks for the help Aaron
  2. If we knew what the questions were Aaron we might be able to answer them.
sorry I thort I added the question I was wondering what is a good affordable welding mask that can put up with a bit of abuse?
I've owned and used Speedglas welding helmets for 18 years now, used every day only changed the reactor batteries twice in my current one (6 years of use and abuse), they do a cheaper range of fixed shades or the top notch adjustable types, the adustable are better as if you turn them down to a lighter shade they bob on for plasma cutting :)
thanks mate Jill have to check them out.
As a ex  factory storeman  i  issued speedglas welding helmets -- the  welding lads found them to be very good & we got great service with them  only trouble was someone like to take them home for keeps  -- which did not go down well with the welders that s for sure  or me -- not cheap but well made
    thanks mate thanks Aaron
