neilw
Can a disc type topper be used as a grass mower?? The same principal applies to how the machine works, just one is used for set as ide, field margins etc the other for prime grass...
Niels
Disc topper don't exist afaik? It is either flails or blades for topping grass and set aside etc.. Disc's would be to fragile. Toppers are designed to mulch the grass so to answer your question; no, they cannot be used to mow grass for silage/hay as it pulverises it. (Unless you have an old flail head forager which blows it into a trailer).
TM190
Have seen it the other way around, Using a Disc Mower to Top some grass, But the discs wouldn't be able to cope with what a topper could.
powerrabbit
I think you've answered your own question really. Toppers with discs are normally used or meant for very short grass and those that I've come across are wheeled ones where the wheels are ajustable for height of cut and are trailed rather than three-point-hitch mounted, the discs normally have three short swinging blades on each and smaller discs and blades than that of a conventional grass mower and requires less power to drive. If your set-aside land is cut only once a year, Autumn, there would be a lot of tough mature growth which would best be cut with a swipe, either the chain or fixed blade type. Ciaran (Perfect-32)
disck mower can be used to top but thay dont last that long! you can get slides that can be but under the bed of a Mower to rise it up a bit and then take them off for mowing silage. zero grasers us them! but a topper is more suited as thay are cheeper and last alot longer with minor repaires! gear box been somthing that gose around the 7-8 year age!
