Ploughing down dust.

Recommended Posts

Well.......

The fine autum weather that helped get the early winter cereals is fast becoming a double edge sword, with the Hawkes Bay blue sky showing no sign of rain the soils have now dryed out to some depth. With there being little profit in cereals now irragation was considerd to coslty so the dust was ploughed under.

The US spec NH 7040 is spreading lime on ahead of the plough in order to mix the lime deep into the soil profile while the farms ageing MF 9240 pulls a commonly seen in NZ kverneland conv. plough up and down the paddock in lands.

With UK style press's considered out of the farms budget and only cambrige rolls or the 17ton grassland roller on hand it was decided to run in the farms new MF 6480 on the ontop of the ploughing with the heavy roller to smash the hardened soil into a seedbed.

Mandy,Lisa's sister was doing a tidy job of the ploughing,it would seem in the last picture everyone has gone back to the yard for lunch.

Few questions:

  • how many different makes of big roll do you have in NZ?
  • did you convert that 9240 yourself and what are its components>?
  • is the female driver a genuine release or a 'conversion' ?

Some creative photos of your layout by the way!

Chris there are 2 or 3 makes of heavy rollers I'd say.Often farmers shear a roller as you don't need them that often.Grass seed and clover seed crops on arable farms are rolled in the early spring to punch down stones that the combine may pick up at harvest time,Dry peas are rolled with the water taken out as the pop through the ground to bring up the moisture and roll in any stones or clods as they do a beter job than cambridge rolls.Grassland farmers roll there land to tidy up were stock have made a mess or paddocks that they want to cut for silage. The silage trucks turn up the ground abit so some will roll there land after it's cut if they did'nt have time before hand.

The 9240 is just an old Siku model, all I've done is - pma front wafer weights, lights

- glazed the cab and detailed inside the cab

- steeps are from UH combine

- "Mandy" is from the lcn MF8650 tractor
