I think the credits for that report must go to me James but at present I do not know if I will be able to cover that show since there are other events in Scotland I could exhibit and cover ...it all depends on which show sets dates first.

It won't be long until I'm back up in orkney but it will be for at least a couple of agricultural shows and the vintage show during "show" week. I hope to catch up with some of the exhibitors who were at bi-annual model show last year. I did a show report last year for Model Farmer but it was not used so I thought I might as well share the farming and lorry related displays.

Father and  son team Keith and Kevin Ritch from Harray have been collecting modify and scratch building for only two to three years but Keith has produced some amazing modifications and scratch builds in that short time period.

Keith works on a farm and around fifteen years ago he was combing with a 17 foot Claas Dominator 108 SL which was fitted with all round dual wheels due to the wet conditions. Keith went down and stopped and after getting the grain unloaded he was pulled out with an International and Massey Ferguson tractor. Years on Keith decided to recreate the scene and make a “peedie†(Orcadian word for small) diorama using a Norev Class Dominator 108 SL.

Treasurer Magnus Moar from Stenness works on a ferry and has been collecting since he was twelve. Magnus brought along a large collection of his 1/50 scale plant but also had other scales on his display including 1/32 scale Dieci and Merlo teleporters.

Gordon Rendall an Orcadian but now lives in Shetland brought down a massive 24 foot x 12 foot display and needed a large transit van to transport it to the show.

Gordon had a slurry tank on his display and used 4 cans of Guinness on both days to depict the slurry. Some including myself said that was a waste of a gallon of Guinness but I must admit it did produce the desired effect.

One of the youngest and first exhibitors at the show was eleven year old Alistair Johnston from Harray in Orkney. Alistair can remember getting his first John Deere tractor when he was eight. Alistair lives on a farm where they run New Holland tractors but they also have a Massey Ferguson 35 and he uses it to turn hay and straw. During Saturday Alistair had been having a good look around the show and that evening he decided to copy and add a few more things to his diorama. He borrowed his dad’s shaving foam in order he could depict a tractor power washing scene. In addition on the Saturday evening he got a biscuit tin and sprayed it to make a slurry store like the one on Gordon Rendalls’ display. I noticed he had even a name on the side of the tank and I asked if he had made the decal himself. I had to laugh when he replied “No that wis me mither …me writing is right coorse†which when translated into Queen’s English means…â€No my mother made the decal since my handwriting is not very legibleâ€. Alistair is very keen and eager to learn new ideas for his diorama and I was telling him about William Moir from Fraserburgh spraying a bird’s feather to depict black smoke coming out of a tractors exhaust. In addition I was telling him about William using a piece of sandpaper to depict slurry being sprayed from a slurry tanker. Quick as a flash Alistair was out with a pen, cardboard and a scissors and he had made one to glue to the rear of his own scratch built sludge tanker.
