Nope just use a plaster blade to smooth out the plaster, a small dab of water here and there using the blade edge smooths out any lumps and bumps. The trick is just to skim the underlying timber so that you get an even layer all over. It's also best to paint the plaster a day or so after as the dry timber underneat drinks the water from the wet plaster and this quick drying can cause hairline cracks in the plaster, which will eventually fall off! If not painted.

Paint it with pva before you plaster and see if it comes off then  it will also give a barier to the under material
