fenryk
Can anyone tell me the maximum width that a trailer can be before it becomes an out of gauge vehicle on the roads? I'm in the midst of a lowloader conversion and I do not want it to be oversize. Thanks ps hope this is the right site - if not please move as appropriate. NCC
Isn't it 3m!!! I think that's the maximum road legal width for Agricultural stuff like mowers, power harrows etc, but thats agriculture so it may differ for HGV's and low loaders etc. Sure someone will be able to tell you better than me Nathan
PDC
I drive a low-loader for a living my Nooteboom trailer is 8'4" wide. When I make trailers I generally make them 80mm wide. Cheers Paul
JC
I think the maximum for an HGV is still eight foot odd, I'll check a couple of bodies tomorrow If I get chance. I think you can go up to 10' wide with a load before you need an escort, not 100% on that though as the regulations have changed recently and its quite a while since I've needed to know!!! PDC might Know the regulations on wide loads.......
NCC
My Kuhn tedder is 9' 6" wide on the road and can be a right pain in the buttocks at times on the roads and gateways. It does however have 4 reflective marker boards on the corners so people can see it. Are the max ag widths and max HGV widths different then or the same. ??? JC
I think they are different Nathan, bear in mind there will be different views towards something that spends 99% of it's time off the road.
PDC
Basically you can legaly go up to 3m wide before a load becomes 'notafiable' where you fax the council and the police of the route you plan to use. When a load becomes outsize or overweight you then operate under special goods rules.Ever noticed the STGO CAT 2 plates on the front of low-loaders 'special types goods order' All good stuff hey!! JC
I've forgotten more than I remember, took my CPC 16 or 17 years ago!!
fenryk
Thanks. I'd used the width of the JCB excavator which gave me 75mm which at 1:32 gives 2.4m so it looks as if I'm OK. The wheels are 60mm (1.92m) wide so there is a slight overhang of .24m each side which I will have to live with unless it is not permitted in real life.
