Welding masks

I've owned and used Speedglas welding helmets for 18 years now, used every day only changed the reactor batteries twice in my current one (6 years of use and abuse), they do a cheaper range of fixed shades or the top notch adjustable types, the adustable are better as if you turn them down to a lighter shade they bob on for plasma cutting :)

Though we  did have a bit of fun with the apprentice and his mask.......... we put black insulation tape between the shade lens and the clear protector so when he struck up the mask stayed dark...... took him an hour to work that out     then we did a similar trick but put a dead spider between the lenses so when he struck up he saw the spider staring at him........ there was a high pitched scream the mask launched across the workshop....... needless to say the apprentice kakked his keks and we were in stitches

Then there was the time we changed a box of welding rods for a box of sparklers.......... that brought about the same amount of merriment......

As a ex  factory storeman  i  issued speedglas welding helmets -- the  welding lads found them to be very good & we got great service with them  only trouble was someone like to take them home for keeps  -- which did not go down well with the welders that s for sure  or me -- not cheap but well made

I bet anything that everyone  at some time has, switched on the welder, wound up or down the dial (arc welder that is) lined up the end of the rod to the metal, nodded head forward to lower the mask and when the ark is struck, you were miles off! Yes, those helmet/masks that darken as soon as you stike an ark are undoubtedly the ones to go for, a no-brainer in my opinion.

If we knew what the questions were Aaron we might be able to answer them.
sorry I thort I added the question I was wondering what is a good affordable welding mask that can put up with a bit of abuse?

Sorry Aaron, Didn't reply to your first post in the negative as may have been thought, guessed what you really wanted to know and you've had some good replies. Type of welding masks and helmets will suit different people and the type of welding they intend doing, either in their job or as part of a hobby. Heavy industrial welding requires a full helmet where when you're getting up close to your work, lets say shipbuilding, large hot stuff is going to fly and you need full head protection whereas if you're doing light welding then a basic hand mask might be good enough and then there are different grades of darkening in the glass and for that matter, for heat and 'spatter' purposes different grades of glass. The concensus however seems to lean in favour of the type of helmet mask with battery operated graduating darkening glass. Hope that the replies up to now have helped you in making your choice.
