William Whyte Cranes erecting a wind turbine

Recommended Posts

I got an email response to a query on a model crane Albert Irvine was displaying at Dingwall for the show report I was writing. At the end of the email he said he had been speaking to Ian May sales manager with Wm Whyte Cranes and a 350 ton was going to be erecting a wind turbine on a hill which Albert's house looks on to. I was speaking to Ian at the Grampian Minature Collectors Fayre on Sunday and he was saying the crane was being driven up from Grangemouth on Monday and I was welcome to go on site and take photos. After finishing work I collected mum and dropped her off to visit dad at Inverurie hospital and then went out the road to Balqhain a few miles North of Inverurie.

I met a Whyte's Scania with trailer on the way there and it had been delivering the ballast weights and I'm told this crane needs 70 tons worth. When I arrived I spoke to one of the Whyte's representatives and he said Ian had warned him to expect me coming to take photos... ;D  ;D

There was a 100 ton 05 plate Liebheer crane which is one of the oldest in their fleet in addition to the Terex AC 350/6 crane. Just a few photos for now but I would like to follow the progress on this project.

Well I went out past there again yesterday Robert after stopping with Albert Irvine for a news and when I got up to the site a chap with hard hat and high vis jacket and all the PPE rushed across saying you must be from the windmill people with a registration plate like that....whats he on I thought but never mind I just said I was here to take photos since the sales manager Ian May from the crane company William Whyte Cranes had told me about this job. He said he would go and see the HSE man. I met him told him what mission I was on and he said he had no objections to taking photos from a distance but I would have to get permission from the farmer first. I got his name Bob Thompson and the farmers name Mark Strachan so away I went since nothing was happening since the first lorries were not due to arrive until 7 or 8 am this morning.

Today I finished work at 2pm and headed out again and just before the turn off  I saw three foreign lorries with huge loads but well I was kinda past before it clicked what they were so about turn at the next left road  and back up to the layby.......4 hours on great conversations and news and 69 photos currently loading onto Photobucket so come back tomorrow for some more Robert.

I did have to jump trough a few hoops before I finally contacted the farmer but after he was convinced I was not there to take photos and spread propaganda  against wind mills he was alright and he said he would see me in the afternoon. After following the first artic up to the site I stopped at the end of the road and introduced myself and thanked him for allowing me to come and take photos. He said I had a rather appropriate registration number...WEC.....Wind Energy Conservation....and I had to laugh since the penny had now dropped and I now knew what the chap I initially met when I arrived at the site two days earlier was on about. ;D  ;D

On the way out to see the progress on the wind turbine instalation I had to stop off at the lay by before the turnoff when I spied three Dutch artic units with specialist haulage trailers.

This WEC has been as dirty as she has been over the last six months...but credit to her she can handle snow drifts and also ploughed stubble parks with muck.....from Donside  to Deeside ;D  ;D ............... 8) ...no point in power washing tonight since I will be going to see the completion of the wind turbine again tomorrow.
