BC Posted April 6, 2013 Author Share Posted April 6, 2013 I thought the blade lift would be the most difficult part of the operation but one of the power company chaps said it was the fitting of the generator. There is constant communication between the two guys at the top with the crane operator and the other power chaps on the ground. When I heard "zero tons Gary" there was a cheer from the ground crew indicating the successful fitting of the generator Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

The Whyte's gaffer said the alternative was to use a second crane but the second one was already away doing a life at the power station lower down at the farm. I gave the farmer Mark Strachan 2 DVD's of the previous two day's photos and said I would drop in past with yesterdays. catkom3 Posted April 6, 2013 Share Posted April 6, 2013 Aye Bill,i bet Ian would love to do a Wind Turbine diorama,but with 1/50th scale turbines costing € 319 and the correct model crane costing in excess of $ 1000 it would be a wee bit expensive Like the photo's by the way,I've never seen one of the smaller turbines built,I've seen quite a few of the big ones,had a few go up the M90 recently heading for Aberfeldy 150 foot blades on 120 foot trailers, Very interesting generators on those little turbines,seems to be built into the outer ring around the nacelle,the big ones have a huge generator which weigh circa 80 tons and are a load in themselves, Regards Joe. Well Joe I'm sure we can suggest the idea to Ian 4 weeks tomorrow ...I glad you liked my photos and well thanks for your two. I was actually planning going back there today with a DVD for Mark but I got waylaid at Roadside Farm Skene where the two Wilson brothers were drilling barley. I'm not a great fan of these turbines but as long as it is not on my back door I don't really mind them that much. The Wednesday was a long one and I was there for 4 hours before I decided it was time to get my lottery ticket. . Thursday and Friday were much shorter and I seemed to manage to arrive as the specialist haulage boys arrived and the crane boys were at work.That reminds me I must pop back out today when I'm in that area an leave the farmer Mark Strachan a DVD with a copy of Friday's photos. BC Posted April 13, 2013 Author Share Posted April 13, 2013 This afternoon I took my uncle Jim up to see the turbine and then up to Mark Strachan's with a DVD of photos from last Friday. My uncle was amazed after seeing the photos and the real deal and well Mark seemed very pleased to have a pictorial record of the build They are presently digging for the power cable from the turbine to the sub station at the farm.
