UMO 542

The 542 was built byn the Lipetsk tractor works in Russia and powered by a 4 cylinder air-cooled diesel. In most other markets it would have been sold as a 'Lipetsk LTZ-55A'.

The LTZ-55A would have been sold as a 'Belarus' before the break up of the Soviet Union (1990 ???), but after the split the Minsk Tractor Works, located in the country of Belarus, took their name back and so only Minsk produced tractors could be called 'Belarus'.

The UK importer (Umo of Letchworth) marketed the LTZ-55A as the 542 under the 'Umo' and 'Umo Progress' names.

During the early 1970's the Lipetsk T-40 (2wd) and T-40a (4wd) tractors were sold here as Belarus tractors, and the later cream/red Belarus 400 and 420 models were also produced by the Lipetsk plant.

A similar system was used with Vladimir (Russia) built tractors (giving us the Belarus 250 and 252) and Kharkov (Ukraine) who built the 1500 and 1507 165hp artics.

Hope I haven't bored too many people ::) ::);)
