Making a simple onion box....

I thought I'd test put my new bandsaw blade tonight by making a quick and simple to make Onion box... trust me... if I can do it - you will be an expert at it  :D

So... first and foremost... I rattled off a few sticks... using my old spud box measurements... 28mm high... 38mm wide and about 60mm long..... er... I think...

NEVER put your fingers anywhere near a bandsaw blade  - this was off and unplugged to show you the size...

I'm using the fence to get even cuts... you could do this with a knife just as well... mark a line on a piece of scrap and cut each piece to length...

Abso-flipping-lutely Martin... would be a whole lot easier to cut as well I guess - good thinking that man

mark what did you make the solid ones out of again as i needed to try and build a few. a nice drawing with all the sizes would be good please

Well... I made them from Norwegian Spruce mate I believe....  not sure of the size... I'll take a look... I think Ben has posted the size in here somewhere - I'll take a look...

how thick was the material is there any chance of you measuring the box you have please!!!!!!!!!!

Well uncle Pete.... the boxes are... 60mm long... 40mm high and 38mm wide mate... not sure where that came from.. I think Wing Commander Holmes got the measurements from a real one...

Gone back to the drawing board tonight... first up... the MKII(08) onion box...

All I have done here is added some more slats in the gaps... and given it a coat of Dark Oak wax...

Then I thought I'd have a pop at making a 'proper' spud box and not the plain sided ones like before...

Somehow I appear to have got the Onion box dims. a little out... it';s 63mm long and not 60  [

Thanks mate... I am pleased with the spud box actually... much better than solid sides... but they take an aaaage to make

They prob do take ages but well worth it , is there any way you could use sheet spruce and grove the planks out to save time and make construction easier for you ? May be try one to see

ye my father in law did about 20 like that for me and he said never again. even if you did them with sheet wood again and maybe draw the lines on they would still be the nuts mate

It would probably take just as long to grove the spruce I bet... plus i may end up with fingers like you Sean... with cuts and chunks of them missing  :D
