converting tims wheels

Tractorman810

Question

been asked to post this up by a couple of members

so here goes

how to convert tims 4260 wheels to fit the new style stub axel britains chassis

stage one

remove the donor wheels of the tims chassis, can be a little harsh doing this but try and keep part of the old axel hole for ref

stage 2

,drill through from the innerside of the wheel right through with a drill bit the same size as the axel hole (3mm)_

stage 3

drill through the new pilot hole now from the front side in progressivly larger drill till you gat a 9mm dia hole in the centre of each wheel,

i used 3 passes ,if you drill from the front you will be able to leave the rear "spines" to bond the new axel hub onto

stage 4

cut two 12mm long sections of 9mm extrenal dia hollow plasti strut tube which will become your new wheel centre, try and cut square as this will be the running edge to the chassis

stage 5

insert these into the wheel centre holes ,pushing into place until they are flush on the outside of the wheel centre

stage 4 final pic

stage 5 once this is done, take a pair of the britains stub pins and cut the old x section of the rear leaving a round disc with the wheel nut patter left, file flat on the cut side and glue 2 x 4mm dia plasti strut tube ,12mm in lenght to them, using the marks from the old bit to centre them

it is important to use 12mm long as the old stubs are not long enough and this gives just enough reach to repalce the new wheels

now to the fronts

stage 1 agin drill a hole into the cerntre to give you a marking pooint, drill out until you have enough to fit a file or if you have one a small dremmel sanding disk into it

stage 2

sand l out the old wheel cetre until you have just the old tims outer rim,the part the tyre is on left

stage 4

this is a little tricky now but not difficult

sand down a small section at a time from the tims wheel untill the hole is the same size/dia as the mf wheel centres, takes a bit of care not to overdo it,but is easy

stage 5

once matched push the mf centres into the tims wheels untill the inside of the rims is flush and level, test by spinning on and axel stub to check the true ness of each wheel, same can be done on the rears to check

buy doing the fronts this way your not struggling to drill the tims wheels out to the 9mm hole like the rears,as the wheel is very fragile on the centre and hard to drill crnterally

and no modifactation is needed of the front stub pins them either

paint in a fetching mf silver mist from nigel green, and fit

see tractor convo section for new pics

as long as you drill out the centres of the rears slowly and in 2/3 passes getting larger each time they are easy,do it from the front and you keep the up right spines as i called them on the rear which gives to a good centering point and more area to glue onto as well,
