flat rolling soil

ok, random question but....

on what occasions do you have to roll soil with a flat roller. ive seen it done last year but never knew why it was with the cambridge rollers just \

we roll the feilds we re-seed after the grass seed is sowed

i think your right because the field that was done is in grass now after being in crop for years

if your rolling seed make sure it is bone dry if not it forms something over the top of the hole and it takes a while longer for the seed to come through thats what i have been told  but we use the cambridge roller

You need some moisture, that's another reason for rolling in the first place; to seal in moisture for the seed.

we dont have much bother getting moisture in northern ireland

Doesn't matter if you use cambridge of flat, do the same job, cambridge rollers are 3 times quicker

          Yes , we always use a heavy flat roll after reseeding grassland, gives a nice flat finish and preeses any stones in if you intend to mow, lot kinder on the mower.

When reseeding grass fields we used to use the flat roller as it gives a good level finish and buries the stones.

We found that cambridge rolls worked fine on the 150 odd acres we did and that was on stony ground but then this was for horses so wasnt as vital as say for silage ground

i say cambridge rolls would be ok for reseeded ground but for the bigger boulders stones you find in my area a flat roller full of water will bury them better than cambridge rolls
