A good model i think, I'm pleased with it, still needs a proper follow through pipe but it was a rush job to get it on and out in the field being a demo, perhaps Orchard would like to try it out against the Monosem? Managed to drill 64 acres today anyway at Speaks and Houses on some bleedy evil ground!

Its been a busy day here in Somerset, everything is a bit stretched staff wise with so much on. Chris has subsoiled half the block at Hurcott and then followed with the Topdown ready for Maize, Webby finished power harrowing Osbornes before turning round and rolling Speaks, and Houses Maize as its heavy ground. Philip has bedtilled Pump House keeping Dan going on the destoner and Mark planting, the last field of King Edwards before we start the free buy market stuff. James has been applying Liquid N to the wheats in the Park and up at Atherstone, he has an absolute mountain of spraying to do now with T1 needing to go on the wheats now aswell as the second flowering fungicide on the rape. All this has left me to sit on the maize drill, had to have a software update on the tractor this morning to get auto row shut off working which meant not starting until 10.30am after filling up with fert, just as well as allowed Webby to get ahead on the power harrow, headed over to Osbornes at Broadway and drilled 12 Ac before falling back into Hurcott this afternoon and managed to drill 40 there leaving 60 tomorrow if the rain stays away. I must say the drill is performing well, matched well to the tractor and auto shut off is a treat and im quite enjoying myself not steering up the field plodding away at 7kph. Shame its going on Wednesday! post-2769-0-31992400-1430517449_thumb.jp

What fert are you English men putting on for maize Alex? Will you knife in any N at last leaf?

MoP going down the spout Ol with building any trace elements up before hand. No N at last leaf but YaraVita MagFlo goes in the tank along with the herbicide spray as a foliar feed.

Another lovely steady dose of rain overnight to freshen things up, put a halt to all field work for half a day though and not so keen on this wind either. Over the weekend we finished liquid N and started on the late flowering fungicide on the Rape, the rest of this will be priority when conditions allow, we drilled up some odds and sods of maize including finishing Hurcott and Frogmary. Yeabridge is prepped but now like a pudding, won't be back there for a day or two. The master plan of splitting up the two drilling groups before re joining end of season has worked a treat as apart from Yeabridge and 65 acres at Yarlington we are ready to re group to blitz the 600 acres at Montgomery's. Lunch time today saw us have the nod from Julian to start up there and it was all systems go, a strong wind was blowing over the land pitching it off so we moved in with the two Challengers, one subsoiling and the other on behind with the TopDown, the drill followed an hour later after making a few adjustments this morning, along with the seed & fert in the curtainsider and lowloaded Scorpion number 2 up there to be met with 10 min storm which put pay to all that. Still at least all the kit is up there now along with Orchards making Longmans old grain store base to the time being as we are 22 miles from home! post-2769-0-68653500-1430858710_thumb.jp post-2769-0-96948300-1430858767_thumb.jp post-2769-0-57041200-1430858823_thumb.jp post-2769-0-79630300-1430858885_thumb.jp post-2769-0-48393200-1430858943_thumb.jp post-2769-0-88630100-1430859007_thumb.jp post-2769-0-27205100-1430859055_thumb.jp

Very interesting Alex.

If you don't mind.....

What were and when for the N and P ?

Reading these English storys/layouts you seem to be big users of MOP are you really short of K?

You don't have issues with salt loading putting that down with the drill?

Whats the biggest limiting factor to yield for maize there?

DAP spread on ploughing as a starter fertiliser to be incorporated into the seed bed so its there when the plant needs it that covers N:P. We use MOP down the spout because it aids root development and then prevents drought stress. Maize has a very high demand for nutrients during its early growth and normally appears to benefit from phosphate placed close to the seed as a "starter" dose regardless of soil P level. Placing nitrogen is also usually beneficial and there is an added benefit from N and P placed together. The fertiliser should be placed 5 cm to the side of the seed row at a depth of 4 cm. It should not be combine drilled because of the risk of damage to the developing roots from high 'salt' concentrations in the soil solution hence the reason of broadcasting N:P and putting MOP down spout. Soil levels of K are sufficient for Maize here as its the first time we have grown it but it is important to maintain this level which is something we will do in the future Ol.
