Reime slurry tanker - scratchbuild

Recommended Posts

I can't help myself, I have quite a few builds going on. But while waiting for a few parts, and to keep myself busy with various kinds of building, I started this one a while back. I've gotten quite far with it as well. Do you have these kind of tankers in the UK or in other countries as well, or any similar? The tanks are made out of fiberglass.

The chassis frame is done, the main part of the tank as well. I've started making the pipework, I must improvise since the tubes doesn't bend without breaking but I think they'll turn out ok. The motor pictured with the test assembly isn't necessarily what I will use, looks a bit big. So if I end up using it I will at least cut off a fair bit of the length. Also recently got a set of wheels from Artisan to use with it.

Looking good Jan, over here in the UK Molex did a fiberglass tanked slurry tanker, think some were also used as water bowsers, but unlike normal tankers they didnt work on a vacuum or pressure system, the tank outlet fed into a screw type pump to create the pressure between it and the outlet, fitted on the drawbar in the photo's. At least 2 around here have had jetters fitted to them to make them into large towed pto driven powerwashers.

Thanks, Paul! Those look similar, a bit different chassis, but the shape look very much like the new Reime tankers these days. I bet those make some pretty powerful washers though! Here's some photos of what I'm going for, this is one of the tankers I have used for inspiration:

Todays progress, I chose to make this in two (perhaps 3 parts). The tank, the chassis + pipeworks and the pump/motor.
The tank is going to be fitted upon the pipes when it's all finished as the pipes function as support being attached to the chassis. This made it a bit complex to get right but using rubber bands I've gotten it roughly together now. Keep in mind it's still very rough, a bit of sanding, fillings and fine adjustments before I start working on the pump itself.

looking really good is that jan erik, the tank looks great as it looks a complex shape to replicate.

Thank you! Haven't had time to do any more work on it recently, but with the good weather coming now I might start priming some parts :)

The tank was a bit complex, I'm still not sure if it's quite right in the front end so I might do some adjustments still!

Your right mate. Looks seriously complex I’d have to have a headscratch for a few days before I was to tackle that !!

Jan you’ve done a cracking job so far mate ! Well it looks near complete I think. I suppose the shape won’t ever be perfect regarding the angles but I think it looks as good as you can get without the help of something like a 3D printer !! I know you say you want to make some adjustments, looks pretty good one of the best scratchbuilt tankers I’ve ever seen

Thanks a lot, mate! Means a lot :) Especially considering the amazing builds you've done!

My main concern with the tank is that it's not got enough height in the front, I guess I could try to widen the gap between the axle or enlargen the tank where the motor should attach, but I won't do anything hasty just yet :D

Looking very well indeed Jan, I agree, on first glance it appears a fairly simple build until you look at the shape and the contours of the tank, very tricky indeed but you have captured it spot on!

No worries mate ! Hope I didn’t sound to critical ! I think it’s just something we all get stuck with... I have a few times made things that don’t quite look bang on with contours etc how John was saying and curvatures of barrels etc etc. I’ve always found if you just get it something like and then move on everything looks fine Once it’s all complete. What you gotta remember aswel is that the emphasis won’t all be on the front of the tank that your not to pleased with. The emphasis is on the model as one piece. I’d suggest completing it to the same standard.. paint it up and decal it, then make your decision as to wether it’s right or not mate :) That’s how i do stuff anyway.

Not at all, Sam! I have decided on a way to do it for now, I started working on the slurry pump tonight. It's going to be a slow process, making small pieces at a time before attaching it all together but I'm confident I have decided on the best compromise :) Will post pictures when I get a bit further along as it will be easier to show than explain right now!

Managed to sneak in a few minutes to attach the first part of the slurry pump! It's going to be a fiddly road from here I'm afraid, but so far so good! Tried including a few photos from different angles to show what it will look like, mind you it will need to be sanded down when it's all settled. Leaving on a vacation in a couple of days, so it won't be anytime soon though!

Sanding can be tedious mate but take your time as and when you can. It really does look class and I’m sure you’ll see that once it’s all together. It’s a very complex shape if your gonna do it correctly as you have, I can’t think of an easier way apart from creating a rough shape and using your filler to make the curvature. Which is what your doing I think. You might even need a second layer of filler I find on some models I make. I use humbrol filler and you get little craters and dimples in it occasionally. Pain in the back side !! Keep up the good work anyhow chap :)

It's carefully done with very fine paper/equipment :) I am quite happy with it, all things considered, really looking forward to getting some paintwork done eventually, then it will look the part I hope! It is complex for sure, and you are quite right with the method you explained. I bend the plasticard to the correct shape, but to get the best curves I use the Tamiya putty. In such open areas like this it takes a bit more though. So I will do another layer when I get home. It's important to have a thick enough layer and build it up a bit, that way it won't be so "risky" sanding it down smoothly.

The Tamiya filler is ok to work with, it does however get a bit stiff quite quickly. But as you say, after a day/night of setting it will reveal some bumps. On one of my Volvo projects I have used at least four layers to fill in a hole in the hood. But it's definetly helpful to have it in the tool box for these kind of builds!

Thank you :)

Been doing a lot of painting on different projects today, the slurry tanker is looking ok for now! A bit too glossy for my taste, but I don't mind too much. My biggest issues for now is that some cracks in the pipework has become visible, and certain areas which has been filled is showing a bit through the paint. Will consider what to do before I put a layer of top coat on it and put it together! Not too good quality on the photos, just rushing before the Champions Leage match tonight :) YNWA!

And here's the finished tanker nearly fit for use, only need a coupling for the slurry hose and some decals which I'm having a bit of a struggle getting ready (can't seem to make the water slide paper work out). Will bring out the proper camera for some pictures when it's completed :)
