NewHolland2 Posted November 6, 2007 Posted November 6, 2007 Just a couple of pics of 40 series tractors in my local dealer's recently......The 82 I was tempted by but sadly the 83 wasn't for sale...... \ Quote

NewHolland2 Posted November 6, 2007 Author Posted November 6, 2007 The 82 was ?8.5K......A mate of mine also looked at the 8 and said it was maybe just as well I didn't get it as it had oil leaks from the brakes, the door wasn't closing properly and he guessed by the bodywork on one side it was an ex-hedge cutting tractor...... NewHolland2 Posted November 7, 2007 Author Posted November 7, 2007 when do you set your test mate. what reg is your escort and engine size It'll be a wee while yet Peter, first lesson next week but shouldn't take me too long due to my previous experience I hope...... Looking at getting myself a 1.4 Escort for starters, 1.6's are just too high on insurance...... :'( Quote

Our 7740s were Ns and the last before they went to the NH decal. Blue wheat-ear (FIAT logo) on the nose and grey skid unit. Quote
nashmach Posted November 8, 2007 Posted November 8, 2007 Two nice clean tractors but with 8*40's you only get the SLE gearbox Quote
Powerstarâ„¢ Posted November 8, 2007 Posted November 8, 2007 That's a better option, the SL gearbox was forever locking up. I know it'c cheaper to repair than the SLE, but the SLE gearbox is an all round nicer layout. Quote

I agree with you on operation but SLE's can be frightening to repair - a neighbour had one and it cost over ?1000 for a top end overall his 7840 had a new gearbox for 4k and now needs a hydraulic pump Quote
Powerstarâ„¢ Posted November 8, 2007 Posted November 8, 2007 Apparently resting your hand on the SLE shift lever for a lot of the time causes so much wear. Quote
NIGEL FORD Posted November 8, 2007 Posted November 8, 2007 Apparently resting your hand on the SLE shift lever for a lot of the time causes so much wear. So it will on just about any gearbox as your are putting pressure on the selector forks in their collars which are designed for free running and only momentary contact while changeing gear....nearly as bad as "riding" the clutch. Though with power shift this may not be the same principal as a manual gearbox, but as usual ...you abuse it-you lose it! Quote
Powerstarâ„¢ Posted November 11, 2007 Posted November 11, 2007 So if I abuse my ASBO... Nah only joking Thanks for the description Nigel, I don't do it myself, but I didn't think it was that bad, learn something new everyday! Quote
