Old thread bumping, but German plant kits like these are available here: http://www.modellandscapeco.com/Busch.html
They're designed for H0/1:87 scale, so perhaps a bit small?
Maybe a little too dear for a starting price:

Now i remember, I've got loads of photos of your display from Toytrac. See what you mean about grass colouring- it can look a bit uniform but makes a nice contrast to the machines and shows them up well.
Hm, last time I starte poking round in a carpet shop I got funny looks from the owner! "What are you looking for sir" "Uh, do you have any fabric that looks like ploughed furrows? " etc

Are there any UK stockists who sell ploughed field mats?
I need something with a quick clean finish, as you might see on a manufacturer's point of sale or catalogue photograph
Best so far have been overseas: http://www.sceneryexpress.com/prodinfo.asp?number=BH7182
(they do smaller 1/8" deep furrows as well)
Earth scatter: https://www.ontracks.co.uk/index.php?page=product&prodID=20614&catID=271
(this would requirte much fiddling to get straight furrows i imagine, so not ideal)
