Britains sheep lost in the east?

Recommended Posts

I was admiring a display at the Model Tractor, Plant and Construction show yesterday and my attention was drawn to some sheep on the display. A model/breed I'd never seen before. Upon speaking to the displayer he said they were Britain's, which surprised me. Apparently they were one of a number of new animal models Britain's where set to produce however the moulds were lost in transit to China and not replaced so only the test runs of each model exist. The gentleman had the welsh sheep and some Gloucester old spot pigs but mentioned there were a few other breeds including a Scottish blackface sheep. Does anyone have more information or photos of these lost animals?

Thank you for the information Tam, very interesting. I did think it odd that they would be fully coloured and ready to go if they where only test moulds but the chap displaying was sure they hadn't appeared in any catalogues. Would have to agree that the Welshies are the best sheep Britain's have done

Will have to keep my eyes peeled for any coming up for sale.

I believe the moulds were damaged in a fire at the factory ,or some thing like that , but I am certain the story going round at the time was it was a fire. I think they were great looking animals and a shame that moulds were destroyed, but luckily keep picking the odd ones up at Toyfairs and Car Boot sales, so collection getting bigger all the time.

Here are some pictures of the above mentioned Sheep from my collection.

As described in the earlier posts we have,

2211  Scottish Blackface, 2212 Welsh mountain , 2213 Suffolk, and 2214 Charollais.

The Lambs 2218 have a head up and head down version of the Suffolk and the Charollais.

The sheep were in the catalogue from 1993 until 1996, but the lambs carried on I believe until Britains started selling the Animals in Sets as appose to boxes of individual figures.

Here are some pictures of the Pigs from that time as well.

You will notice from the pictures that there are 2 different sizes of mould and I believe I have seen all 4 breeds from the range in both sizes of the mould.

The piglets shown here I believe are the normal ones which were in the catalogue before this range was introduced in 1993, and then back in the catalogue in 1995.

The piglets shown in the 1993 and 1994 catalogue show them with what seems like a smaller version of the bigger moulds, as they seem to have a longer snout and floppy ears. I am not sure though if they were ever produced, and if they were , it would have been a short production run. I need now to check my collection to see if I have any.

Would be interested to know if anyone else on here has piglets that resemble the pictures in the 93and 94 catalogue. Hoping people will read this post and get looking through their collection. Sorry some of the pictures are not the best.

I think these are the pigs in question, I,'ve got some of the sheep in a quad bike set that's in the loft as well I think.

I've about 6 of these old spot pigs, plus saddleback, black versions and white versions, all in two poses, which I bought as a job lot some years ago. I''ve also just one of the 'head erect' sheep, which came in a gift set. Been trying to find more sheep varieties, but nothing found except for the old and new versions of the "standard" models.

PS Just seen the post by Tractorman314... Those are they! :-) That'll teach me to skip to the end of a thread...
