Sculpting, how hard can it be?

Recommended Posts

I’m very impressed. Some of the sheep look very good and the shearer looks very nice as well.

Today, during shearing sheep, i thought it would be nice to make a dio with a shearing scene.

So i started looking on here if anybody had given it a go yet, to find this topic. Not sure if i have the patience and skills for this.

Have you already posed the shearer with a sheep? I would love to see it.

Thank you for your kind words Hielke. I have shared some photos of my finished shearing scene on my diorama topic here

I have also attached a few photos of the finished shearer. Hoping to get lots of sculpting done this summer.

A day off waiting on the baler so I've got some sculpting on the go. Some more figures this time, I find them much easier to do than animals and I'm usually more happy with the outcome.

This is the latest approach I've taken with them. Starting with a wire and card armature, this allows me to position the limbs how I want while the card gives me an approximate bulk size to the body.

I've then covered the armature with milliput to give a rough shape to the figure and the head, this also sets the pose in place so the wire can't flex and bend.

Once the milliput has set I start building up the Modelling wax to get the final shape of the figure.

With the basic outline sorted I can start to refine the details. The wax remains soft throughout so I start with the areas I hold least so that I don't have to keep reworking them if they're accidentally squished by my fingers (normally I'd have the model trapped in a wooden block, which I've lost at the moment!). In the case of this milker it's the apron and face first.

The finished piece ready to mould. When I'm sharpening up the detail I put the figure in the freezer for 10 minutes to let the wax go harder, this allows for the detail to be made nice and sharp such as the bow on the apron.

Next on the list is a man leading cattle round the ring, another shearer and someone worming sheep.

Thanks for looking!
