The Tractor Twitcher
Having seen how popular the County and Roadless photographic threads have been I thought i'd start one on another of this country's famous Fordson / Ford converters; Doe, and their dual tractor originally conceived by Essex farmer George Pryor. I'll get the ball rolling with this selection of photographs from my own photographic collection. Early Dual Power example in action at the British National Ploughing Championships 2010 where there quite a few of these impressive tractors in action. This particular Doe once belonged to author Stuart Gibbard and is seen here at Murton near York in Tom Lowther's ownership. The Tractor Twitcher
Dave Pantry's example seen on two occasions at the Festival Of The Plough event at Epworth near Doncaster. The second time I saw this tractor it was also in action with a matching Doe Reversible plough.
The Tractor Twitcher
James Hardstaff's example in action with his Doe tool carrier and reversible plough. The Tractor Twitcher
Moving onto the later 130 model commencing with Richard Sowerby's example seen at Newark several years ago. Michael Hoey's restored example yoked to a Doe tool carrier and plough. Edited February 14, 2012 by walterderwent
The Tractor Twitcher
Ernest Doe's very own 130 on parade at the Fordson 500 event in 1996, to this day one of the best themed rallies i've ever been to. Duncan cabbed Doe 150 on display at the Millenium Show also at Newark. As discussed in the Lamma 2012 thread here's John Hayward's Natco 130+ contemporary Doe tractor. The Tractor Twitcher
Another Doe related product i've captured on camera is Bernard Saunder's one off grader. This machine started life as an Allis Chalmers Model D grader that Doe were regularly servicing for a customer. The decision was taken in 1958 to rebuild the machine as a reverse drive unit with power coming from a Fordson Major.

The Tractor Twitcher
Lastly a selection of other tandem tractors based upon the same concept. Lovely looking Massey Harris tandem tractor seen at Newark in 2010. David Brown 995 based tandem tractor that featured in a fleet profile in Classic Tractor a number of years ago. Finally this locally built Doe "style" tractor puller based upon two Fordson Majors equipped with Perkins V8 engines and front grill from a Massey Ferguson articulated tractor, christened the black beast. The Tractor Twitcher
D'oh Very good Barry.... david, some great, good quality photos there, thanks for sharing. Thanks Chris, appreciated and you're very welcome. Do rather like all things Ford conversions from the likes of County, Roadless, Doe, Muir Hill etc. Between Dad and I we've captured quite a few at various rallies and working days over the past twenty or so years. On the subject of Doe tractors too there's still a few machines built by them I'd like to capture with my camera. Rather keen to find a Doe 5100 ( six cylinder Ford 5000 ) and i'm fairly certain Ernest Doe themselves have a very well restored 150 of their own in their ranks that i'd like to photograph. Lastly there's the R.A.Ince developed 180 ( two 7000 power units ) which I seem to recall caused quite a stir on the old forum when it was advertised on e-bay with a less than correct description. I believe it had previously made £34,000 at a farm sale many moons ago.
BC
Nice selection there David. Does are a rather rare sight and I think I have only seen two different ones but no photographs to add I'm afraid. The only one I have is a 1/32 SCALE down kit which I made over 25 years ago. Thanks Bill, appreciated. The first example I saw in the flesh was the ex-Stuart Gibbard example, quite an extraordinary sight for a tractor mad six year old such as myself back in 1989. It's only since I started attending many of the major events at Newark and the British National Ploughing Championships i've discovered more to photograph. On the model front i'd absolutely love a few 1/32nd scale Doe tractors lined up in on of my cabinets. There were quite a few fully built up Scale Down and modified Scale Down examples on view at Zwolle and Ken Davies often has several versions built up on his stand too. Might just have to part with some of my pennies for one this year.
Valley Axe Man
Some fantastic pics David, spanning the production and evoloution of the Doe tractor, A collection of Doe models would be something different, I have the 1/16th triple D and the 130, plus a scaledown triple D and the DBP 5100 that was auctioned a few years ago at the Annandale Model Exhibition. I think the 5100 was a bit of a rare beast in real life, because Ford Belgium built the 5095 which was similar spec.
Valley Axe Man
in fact i've read somewhere David that they may have only built around half a dozen 5100 tractors, so it a very rare beast indeed!!

Really enjoy capturing all types of Ford / Fordson conversion and other variants produced by these manufacturers. On the model front having picked up a number of DBP Countys and a pair of G & B Roadless tractors last year i'd really like to expand my collection of Ford / Fordson conversions to include some 1/32nd scale Doe tractors too. It's definitely one of my favourite themes in my collection. I'd really like to find a real 5100 to photograph at some point hopefully. I remember one being reported on in Classic Tractor making a fair chunk of money at a farm sale a number of years ago. I think it was fitted with a Duncan cab too. Speaking of the Belgium built 5095......

Thanks for your very kind comments Wil. Being a huge fan of these types of conversion from the likes County, Doe and Roadless i've really enjoyed splitting up my photographic collection into themes such as this and contributing them to the forum. Not too disimilar to how I enjoy displaying my own model collection. I'll more than happily start further pictorial threads on other former conversion specialists such as Muir Hill, Bray, Northrop, Matbro. Valley Axe Man
Hi David, after further research and reading into the Doe 5100 in various books information is fairly thin on the ground but , it turns out that Ford asked Doe to drop the 5100 tractor as at the time Ford were launching the 7000 with roughly equal power to the 5100 thus Doe would have taken sales from Ford with a higher horsepower 2wd tractor. Only a hand full were made before production stopped but then Ford brought out the 5095 using the EVA cast hull to a similar design as the Doe machine, although the 5095 was also available with 4wd. Hope all goes well in trying to track down a suitable tractor for your photographic archives

Hopefully i'll be able to find one that's made it's way into preservation. I'm a member of the Blue Force Club and i'm planning on attending various events they will be at and organising. One might yet turn up at one of these. I hope.

( i also a member thanks to phil hairsine) No probs for info, just happy to help David Thanks Paul. Fully agree with you. I ended up joining at Newark last year thanks to Malcolm Booth who restored my Dad's old childhood Britains Ford 5000 and Fordson Super Major for him for Christmas. Really pleased I did. The magazine is a very enjoyable read and the club seems really friendly too having spoken to some of the exhibit owners last November. Here's a link to all the photographs I posted to the forum from my trip to Newark: http://www.farmtoysforum.com/forum/index.php?/topic/18273-anyone-going-to-newark-at-the-weekend/
