Great progress over the last week with ground works. We now have two blocks ready at Blackdown and Bondip for drilling Spring beans, Clarkes at Downhead will be ready by the end of today too so it's all coming together. The direct drill has also been put on ready for the 100 acre trial into standing cover crop. Talking of cover crops Mark has topped all the ground that is destined for beans and is now moving onto this years maize grounds, it will be interesting to see how much of an improvement this makes, already seeing a difference with warmer soil temps and no erosion or run off over winter, excellent stuff and leaves us looking promising going into seedbed prep later in the year. Webby has now put the plough on to plough in the mulched cover crops before enzyme activities are lost and tonight we are changing over the RLM onto the drill ready for the mornings outing on the 12m Horsch Sprinter to pop some beans in the soil. image.thumb.jpeg.d2180e7ad71946a8bb131a0image.thumb.jpeg.2dcff4fbfff4d9744ab7f5bimage.thumb.jpeg.801af73b2b2b96bb4c57c6b

The spring drilling campaign is nearing the end now with 125 acres left at Tony Houses. The direct drilling trial went well, the drill coped extremely well with the cover crop which was sprayed off two days before although it was a lot slower due to the amout of material passing through it, just contemplating whether to roll in or not. Sprayer is out non stop liquid fertilising, desperate to wrap this up and get the pre ems on the beans now before T0's on the wheats, pressure is on. The plough has also been out turning over some ground for Maize, Mark has started to look at fitting up the planter and front tank to his 724 changing brackets that were on the John Deere to fit. Nice to see an emptier machinery shed! image.thumb.jpeg.559dacda3b2c211fc442e5eimage.thumb.jpeg.db996bb7024e6c5d1851795image.thumb.jpeg.c0071042b0880d1286587f6image.thumb.jpeg.ce77b0d80fc49af49e5560aimage.thumb.jpeg.eaee14eb5537709f79f083c

A quick update to keep you up to speed with what's been going on. Second split of N has been applied on OSR just as stem extension is starting, will get some Proline on this after T0 is finished which we are well underway with. All the maize ground is ready for break down when we are ready, no rush yet as it's far too cold. We have been wanting to start potato planting which has been delayed by workload 2 weeks back and now with a bit of rain, it would be nice to get the 70 acres of Shepody in the ground at least, I'd thought there might of been a gap between this and planting maincrop this year but it's looking like it's going to be back to back. 220 acres to get in this year, cut right back, the lowest acerage in about 15 years. OSR acreage is looking like it will be replaced next year if prices do not pay this year.

A quick update, pictures to come. It's been stop start recently on farm and the ground has taken a while to pitch off to travel again. T0 has now finished and we are now rushing to get some proline on the OSR and a second split of N of the wheat before we turn around and do T1 in 3 weeks. Fertiliser is being spread on the maize ground and having a subsoil which keeps one of the 828's and one of the Challengers busy. Today we are starting potato planting up at Parsonage, Variety is Shepody for McCain, 70 acres, bedtilling to start after lunch for the destoner and planter to move in tomorrow. It's good to get going again as workload hots up this spring.

The pictures to go with the last update. It's been a juggling act with staff and machinery to get everyone in the right place with so much going on at once. Phil has the 939 on the bedtiller this year which is well matched and still has enough grunt to pull the subsoiler for headland prep when he is far enough ahead on straight work. Dan has is own 724 on the destoner and Mark has his 724 on the planter. First field mapped out up at Parsonage. Webby is on logistics with his green 828 hauling seed and the bowser about making sure everything is in the right place keeping everyone going, also moving the handler from field to field. Whilst planting is on James sits on the sprayer applying proline to rape currently out at Speak's, this has caused it's own problem of water so the Unimog has its demount bowser on and deployed to the area. Chris has moved to spreading fertiliser on the maize grounds, currently up at Camelot south block, the curtainsider is up there and the second handler so he is self contained, unhitching the spreader at night to bring back the curtainsider. Hopefully get this wrapped up soon to start working ground down, things are moving fast now.image.jpegimage.jpegimage.jpegimage.jpegimage.jpegimage.jpegimage.jpegimage.jpeg

excellent Alex... I'm currently planning on a new planter for myself since the loss of the 32b but just cant decide what size or maker I want to go for but itll be along sometime soon... Had thought of a 4 row mounted but such a planter is very heavy on the tractor. Itll be a cup type planter of some kind and as ive already covered the Reekie and the  Grimme 32b itll have to be something different from anyone except Standen as ill never make any of their stuff due to my experience of contacting them for information on their products to replicate in model form but they weren't nice or helpful at all....Ill have to decide soon on the planter though

Since the last update things have moved on another notch, all 70 acres of Shepody have been planted at Parsonage, the planting team have now moved down into the park starting at the far end by Billy Baker's workshop. Phil who is on the bedtiller is mixing his time between getting ahead of the destoner and subsoiling for maize, the 65kph 939 is handy for this with maize ground spread out over a 30 mile radius. We started to drill maize on Tuesday up at Brympton, Chris on the drill with Webby ahead on the power Harrow. Alyvdas our Lithuanian friend is back to help us out at this busy time, we have hired a tractor from Richard Parris for him, unfortunately it's a 516 but it's ideal for ferrying seed spuds, fertiliser around and rolling in maize. James is still on the sprayer which I have to say is performing very well this year, currently applying T1's. The work load ahead for it is frightening though, second dose of liquid fert needed which is late, pre em the maize, pre em the spuds, Sclerotinia spray on the rape before T2, nightmare, going to have to look at this next year as we are jeopardising timings and then the weather doesn't help either.

Hello Smithster, how's things up your way? We seem to have 4 seasons in one day at the moment, temps rising next week

Yes hello stranger not seen or heard much from you latterly , yes we have been getting some strange weather over April had to work long days on the very few days that was rain/wind/snow free rape has had all its fertiliser and seems to be pulling together as blasted pigeons hammered one bit , in next few days hope to go though wheat/barley with last dose of N and also T1 sprays together with something for chocolate spot in the beans . Do to the cold/wet April cereal crops have stood still  and grass don't seam to be moving much nether but I expect in a few weeks we will be praying for rain to swell the crops, how good it is to live in the UK with all this weather
