Tommy Gough
All go as long as it's not raining is it Julian? With all this maize going in the ground your going to be busy come harvest. Hope to see nice tidy clamps come the end of the season. Back to current events, how much much grass do you expect to be chopping for 1st cut? Do you think there may be less to chop as farmers have fodder left over?
tractorboyjules1977
Cant afford to waste good quality 1st cut silage with shoddy work in the pit , we shall be employing the 416 along with a tractor and front buckrake for as moch consolidation as we can , as to acreage we should be up around in the region of 3000 acres in total 1st cut silage , plus im sure more will come in within the coming days .Personally I dnt think there will be less to chop , but then again all depends on mother nature for what grows and what doesn't tommy ! Tommy Gough
Good to see that attitude and not just a push it in the pit and leave style contractor 😃. Have you considered trying out a compactor on the back of a clamp tractor (similar to picture below)? They can make a big difference. Although I suppose it will be a scratch build in the model world.

Light Land
Do you ever mow the grass in the morning then put the milkers in the paddock that night so they eat less water in the grass/make abit more milk Julian?
tractorboyjules1977
No ol , all our cows are strip fed , except for the low yielders they usually have a whole paddock depending on the volume of grass , but both the low and high yielders have access to a certain amount of silage and straw throughout the day and night .
tractorboyjules1977
Silaging 2015 now under way and with the recent additions of kit arriving into the fleet its been a suck it and see first couple of days , the krone 1100 seems to be the kiddie to cope with our operations ,after a day with krones forage expert , the machine seems to be set up up just right for the crop that's in front of her .So far we've put 150 acres through her without any troubles ! may it continue ! As for the new pottinger triples very pleasing set up and very nimble but sterdy machine . With bad weather set up for tomorrow a halt earlier today was called on the mowers as we thought makes more sense to pick up whats on the ground just in case we don't get back to picking up for a few days , as we dnt want to lose the quality of grass we've already got in the pit , so with another 200 acres left at base , it will be next off to Godfreys with silage team no1 to pick up 175 acres , and silage team no2 will be off up to Anthony jeans for a 450 acre staunt , all weather depending ,but teams are all ready to go full pelt !

bluegreen
Nice layout there, a bit too big for my humble dwelling ..................unfortunately ROS haven't updated their 2012 spec Big X1100 unlike the real thing which since very late 2012 has a series of new vents along the side panel due to them switching to SCR engine technology. I wouldn't have noticed unless Norwich based contractor Ollie Arnold turned up at Gs in 2012 with two Big X1100s ............. one was the original 2011 machine that ROS so superbly reproduced and the other was a 62 plate brand new first in the country with SCR technology. Pics of both below.
tractorboyjules1977
Yeah totally agree with you bluegreen , Seeing the new real life modelling on the krones last week at grassland 2015 all be it 700s and 500s , I think until ros produce the new styling for 2015 we will have to make the best out of an older styled model without being too picky and niggly on minor differences , Unless we want to spend sheds loads of money to replocate model for real life , which I think you will agree is starting to getting seriously exspensive hobby !!
Jdeere6910
How do you rate the Krone Julian, I really like the look of them
bluegreen
current Forage harvesters are all looking seriously good aren't they, I already really liked the look of the Krone, NH and Claas harvesters...............then we get the smart new Fendts and now John Deere have replaced the ancient looking old 7000s with the superb 8000s, its hard to know which brand to buy!! Luckily I chose well with the krone (ROS) model back in 2012 and haven't been tempted to change it yet, but if someone makes a top notch JD 8000 by Agritechnica my credit card may well be let loose
tractorboyjules1977
Well pat cant fault it , with the easy flow header munches on through it , just what u want , also with great back up makes sense to us to go to krone , Talking to Bakers of rushywood farm , haselbury plucknett there really impressed with there machine and a vast improvement on there previous john deere chopper
Light Land
Is loader wagon silage not as popular as made with a chopper there Julian? I read a wee write up by a big claas dealer/silage contractor here saying a loader wagon is better value for the farmer and contractor alike than runing a chopper and all the comes with it unless your cutting miles away from the bunker in a heavy crop. The same there is it?
tractorboyjules1977
I would say ol from farming in south somerset for many many years , the forage wagon is not all that popular , there are a few floating around but not too many to mention when it comes to contractors around here , talking to many farmers the earlier forage wagons had longer chop length so with farm nutristionists wanting a more variable chop length ,ie shorter , the self propelled was more versatile and as you say ol with ever extending journeys from field to clamp it seems that trailers are a better option , but if your a 1 man band and the evolution of wagons in the last 10 years this could be seen as a justifiable option .I must admit in my opinion the self propelled is more appealing !

tractorboyjules1977
A bit of a quieter day today which was rather unexpected , thank you to the weather gods ! Just as the silage team set off from the yard to travel over to jeans at cricket malerbie farm , the rain decided to start falling , so that was a bad start to the day but cant be helped , luckily by lunch time the wind was blowing off the tops of the grass which was already cut , so the decision was made to send out the tedder and get some of the grass moved , hopefully a dry night and we can get blowing sometime tomorrow afternoon .With the rain this morning we decided to get the maize drill in the workshop and let smarts swap over the discs and spacers from maize to fodder beet , all ready for 50 acres of fodder beet to put in this week ,again weather permitting !Also this morning saw us shoot down to oakleys to pick up our newly fabricated buckrake which Alex and his fabricator made up for us , top job another 1 in the offering I reckon ! Hopefully better weather around the corner !
