tractorboyjules1977
So far so good for silaging this year , a total of 1400 acres covered by both machines and a very pleasing result all round , Yesterday the big m blast through 95 acres for Chuchills of chard , this afternoon we started picking up with the krone forage wagon , as the the other 2 silage teams are flat out , the advantage of being able to call upon a 1 man band machine ! We've been on hauling fodder beet back for the cows and also stock piling in the pits for the AD plant which is all but complete and ready for its open evening at the end of the month , so watch this space as soon Somerset Agri Power will be up on running .
Jdeere6910
Lovely forage wagon Julian, what did you use for the beet in the last picture?
tractorboyjules1977
Thanks pat , gotta keep ahead of the competition around here ! the beet is made of resin , I bought it off Dave Towse trading , looks the business especially when its been rolled around in a bit of fine dirt just to take the edge of the whitness off .
tractorboyjules1977
Saturday saw the sprayer venture out on the spuds for the first time this year , in time to catch the first clutch of weeds coming through .On the silage front the first 18 acres of haylage was cut on Tuesday and then round baled on Saturday , just in time before a wet day on sunday , these were all loaded and hauled away destined for Pitt Farm livery yard , A good quick turn around and money back in the bank , hopefully the first of many small patches of haylage destined for the livery yards .The main silage teams cracking on through first cut still , by weds / thurs should be nearly all complete on the chopping side of things for a couple weeks , just aswell as thurs the tractors and trailers booked up for long hauling duties helping out Alex & Stew !

tractorboyjules1977
With all 1st cut chopping just about finished the boys making there way back to the yard to wash down and diesel up , With the trailers on a quick turnaround to go straight back out on hauling for Alex and Stew ,so theres no rest for the trailer boys for a couple more days at least ! The tankers been non stop covering all the recent silage grounds , but with the tanker now going off covering all the silage grounds for the AD plant , we just hitching up the umbilical to take over from the tanker , at least we can keep dirty water moving !!! Meanwhile back in the yard the uniwrap has just finished in the workshop and is ready to crack into 75 acres of silage at Hill farm for the lanes .
tractorboyjules1977
Weekend is here and think I spoke too soon on the silageing front , just as the krone was going in the workshop for a service after 1st cut , the phone went and looks like were having a quick turnaround and off again , 370 acres to mow with the big m , and then into chop and haul to help stew out around coombe farms land , This morning saw myself shoot down to alexs at Oakley to hire his bale trailer , as at the mo until our new bale trailers turn up were a bit short on the trailer front , much appreciated alex , dug us out of a hole , lets see what next week brings !!
tractorboyjules1977
Beginning of the new week and we've managed to chomp through 100 acres at hill dairy for coombe farm before the rain started to fall , so now its all machines parked up tonight hopeing for better weather tomorrow ! Sunday saw the 1st outing this year for the square baler , off down churchills at chard for a 20 acre jaunt of silage , followed closely around the field by the wrapper and the hauling team , getting these bales off the ground a priority due to the heavy clay ground and the forecast of persistence rain this evening ! Also back at base decided to put the hedge trimmer on to tidy up the verdges and the hedges leading into the farm , make it look nice and tidy for open farm sunday this weekend .
Jdeere6910
Nice baling outfit there Julian. What tractors does the fleet contain?
tractorboyjules1977
well pat at this moment in time the fleet consists of 5 fendt 724's, fendt 828 , fendt 939 , fendt 818 ,fendt 820, 2 john deere 6210r's , john deere 7430 , When we hit peak times for harvest the fleet will have a few more additions to cope with the workload .
Jdeere6910
That's some fleet, you won't have trouble finding drivers for all that!
Light Land
In real life would you have housing for all the drivers near the yard with a person keeping the housing tidy and cooking and running meals out to the drivers?
tractorboyjules1977
No not really ol , all drivers are within 10 - 15 mins from the yard , either from neighbouring farms or the surrounding towns and villages , They do get a tea time snack from the other halfs brought out at tea time when were on harvesting and silaging though !!!! tractorboyjules1977
With the cancellation of our open farm sunday last weekend due to the unexpected amount of work the lads have had to get through , we've had to put it back to a later date , On a brighter note though the AD plant is now functional and with only a few more things left to do around the site , a pleasing sight to behold for members of Somerset Agri Power . the decision was taken on Tuesday to get the forager rolling for a bout 200 acres of rubbishy old pasture grass up at cricket st Thomas , this was the first amount to come back to the new silage pits at the AD plant ,Back in the yard the pre emergence spray being applied to the 1st of the 2500 acres of maize to get over ! in the yard a couple of days of niggly breakdowns has seen the the quadrant in the workshop having a couple new knotters attatched , and the older 6210r has started to leak a bit of water , so smarts out fixing this with a new water pump , hopefully by weekend we'll be back to full capacity !

Light Land
Really looks like old grassland were the chopper is working, nice. Can you put bark chips from forestry in an AD plant?
tractorboyjules1977
After a late night last night down at Oakleys open evening a great night was had by all and many topics of conversation were held throughout the evening , congrats to Alex and the team for a successful night , Back on home soil a slightly quieter week than normal with the first lot of dirty water coming out from the AD plant which is ticking along quite well , and seems to be a learning process for all involved , the digestate being stock piled for later use and the umbilical going straight onto grass land . Back on the farm side 2nd cut silage a couple weeks away yet with grass growth really slowing up in the last 10 days due to the lack of moisture , so the lads just doing the basic day to day jobs , inc pasture topping and serviceing machines . On the machine front for the farm a meeting was held in house on how we can redefine the business and much was talked about , inc tractor fleet , cow numbers , so watch this space for further development !

tractorboyjules1977
Start of a new week and at last some rain ! Alex and I decided to go on and start cutting 2nd cut silage for the AD plant yesterday , with 400 acres to get through before more rain forecast on Friday , with 150 acres cut yesterday , it was a late start today with earl morning rain , but by mid afternoon we were back on mowing starting out at Cadbury and working our way back nearer to home , with 4 trailers and 2 of Stew's on to follow the forager , we decided to send the krone wagon out aswell for the trips nearer to base , Back in yard everything getting the once over before we set off tomorrow morning to start blowing , Decided to send the rake out tonight and Stews will be joining up in the morning to try and keep far enough ahead of the forager , Dnt seem that long ago that 1st cut finished , but hey ho keeps the machines and lads in work !

tractorboyjules1977
Another week without hardly a drop of the wet stuff here in deepest somerset ! On the work front the lads about to get ready for setting off spreading and tanking tomorrow on the 2nd cut silage grounds for the AD plant , Were try and hit it hard this week with the help of 1 of Alexs tractor and driver running our 3rd spreader and running 2 tractor and trailers of digestate out to the further away grounds ready for spreading later in the week . The tankers will do the short journeys closest to the yard , hopefully all will get washed in later in the week with the forecast for heavy thunder showers towards the weekend , Managed to find a spare couple hours earlier today to collect the new silage trailer from smarts down at Dorchester , and a nice bit of kit it seems to be , just in time for silaging later in the week .
bluegreen
That Krampe does look nicer than the Rolland styling wise, but its a shame its not available in blue ..............too much red is not so easy on the eye as blue or green.
