Tractorman810
theres some of them whiches arround to,i think they use the older fords to pull the long work platforms up, seem to have a 30 odd m platform they raise and lower depending in what arm they are on, guess the orange whiches do the long pulls on the cables, seem to be doing 6 at a go here, or three arms at a time on these bruisers, main feed into plymouth and a bit part of cornwall ,bigger than you think as the bottoms a good 30 ft below the banks of the main road

Regards Joe. When it was new(ish) The one I saw was back in the 90's and was not so new then. Seen a few in the preservation scene, although I doubt whether many were made as quite a specialised bit of kit.
catkom3
As I recall, back in 64 / 65 they also had a Leyland Martian, well suited to the job as it had a central winch,so the cable could be fed out the back / front or either side' Regards Joe,
Stabliofarmer
A little late to the party. They're working on the lines down by me aswell and a yard where we keep a container has been rented out to Balfor Beaty who are carrying out the work. They where slowly filling it with kit before it all went out onto the moors, been meaning to photograph them up there but never had the chance. Quite the range of stuff including a 5000 based FMF8 Auto mower winch tractor. There is a Fordson Major based one available for sale at the moment but they want a little too much for it. Rare for them to come up for sale as they are usually scrapped to stop rival companies from buying and using them. The tractors aren't used for pulling up the cables. Older versions of the FMF8 winch tractors had a jib above the driver and where used to carry the cable drums around. They where also used to lift the large insulators up to the pylon arms and pull the cable cars that travel along the lines with a man in them, shown in one of the photos. Large independent units like the one Joe photographed where used to lift and accurately tension the electrical wires.
