The Valley Axeman's Major Marshall Mission

Snook an hour in up at the shed to push the 472 on a bit, got the repair sections bent up out of a sheet at work this last week so set to with the grinder chopping out some of the rot ready to allow trimming the oversize panels to fit... Meanwhile, Gemma decided to tackle the roof, all seems solid so a good rub down and a coat of primer before being treated to a splash of silver

Then set about the side window lower support, basically a piece of 1" box section so out with the grinder and cutting disc, the rot cut out and a new piece welded in... The bent repair section in one of the previous posts goes under this piece of box and across to the inner wing panel forming the top on the inner wing.. and the lower flange carries the bolts to fit the outer mudguard to...  anyhow that will happen be next Saturday before that gets attacked and welded into place.

Looking good Paul ,and good to see your trainee has made a good job on the roof 👍. Do you play tricks on your apprentice like asking them to get the metric adjustable 😂   or send them to the stores for a long wait ☺️

Cheers Smithy, aye Gemma is taking to doing a bit of work with the spanners 👍 but no I don't play tricks on her... I save that for the Muppets at work 🤣 best ever one was putting black insulation tape in between the welding lenses in the welding helmets of the apprentice's, then get them to have a go with the mig and they can't see anything but yet you put the helmet on and weld blind... It was fun for hours 🤣🤣 especially when we squashed a spider between the lenses... Poor lad crapped his pants when spider appear before his eyes when he started welding 🤣🤣

Reeto time for a brew... Right hand inner wing plated up with afore mentioned folded sections, mudguard offered up and a happy medium was found then marked for the mounting bolts.... whilst the clamps were holding everything about where it wanted to be out came the welder and everything given a good slack handful of tack welds.... Sanded up ready for final weld up once I borrow a little mig from work, holes drilled for the mudguard, almost time to chop the rot out the left-hand one once I get a 2" strip put in behind the door striker plate as during this morning's progress I unearthed a little bit more tin worm 👍

looking good paul

Cheers John, Aye we getting there, looks healthier now than it did when it was full of tin worm, get this side boxed off and then tackle the other... To be fair this was the worst of the wings. Stuck battery lead on it and away she went first turn... Let her run up And just let her warm herself abit,   For her looks she's a good starter 👌

getting there paul,i take it they are the original wings going back on?

Aye getting a bit done Sean, the right hand wing was supplied as a replacement to the original knackered one when I bought the tractor off Tom, and is a genuine original, but the left hand wing was missing completely so when I get round to it will be a remanufactured copy of an original that Charnleys supply. Finding good wings is like trying to find good doors...  I missed a pair of Qm cab wings that's bloke had from down your way that I could have collected last Sunday at Shepton had I been a bit more on the ball but had already been sold by time I seen them advertised

Another few Sunday hours spent on the 472 with Gemma after our week away down Anglesey, set about   windscreen surround unpicked and spotwelds drilled out cleaned mating surfaces between box section and plate, clamped back up and re welded then seam sealed, corner profile filled and sanded off then given a good coat of red lead.

Also Gemma set about cutting the rot out if the left hand inner wing ready for plating up once I get the sections trimmed for fitting, also got the front wheel off to get a look at the kingpins, first thoughts are just a couple of shims which I have left from rebuild of the 804 axle not long after her arrival

Another productive few hours up at the workshop, firstly whilst front wheels are off we thought we'd get them stripped, and between Gemma and myself they were Needle gunned, wire brushed on Angle grinder then sanded before being given a good coat of red lead.... I've never been one for spraying wheels, always preferred a brush as you always get a run somewhere due to the shape of them.... A light sanding and a blow off before they get a coat of silver.

And lastly whilst in the mood to watch the blue light I welded up the right hand inner wing, dressed off then I've altered the design slightly by seam sealing and then filling the joint between the 1" box section and the mudguard repair section that I bent up, it's normally metal to metal but seeing as water can sit between on top of the now remanufactured stainless steel inner wing and underside of the box section that given time it'll rot out again so my slight change will help stop that. Might as well try and improve the job whilst I'm at it.... Anyhows sanded down and then given a coat of red lead, just 2 holes to drill and tap to refit the side window and once the back wheel is off I'll fit the mudguard and repair the inner wing at the lower front edge to get this side finished off and ready for a bit of blue paint...

She's coming along nicely Paul.

Cheers Justin, aye we keep getting a bit done, it's surprising how much progress can be made when you can get stuck into it for a few hours, think progress will slow down abit once I start replacing the wiring loom... But once get that done we can give her a bit of work and see what develops before tackling the cab doors... Be a bit of welding and plating needed in them
