Straw after carrots

This on Twitter today - never seen straw picked like this before. He reckons he's getting 80 - 90% of it and doing around 50 - 60tph. Compost it and spread it later. Sounds a lot better than trying to incorporate it.  :)

They actually re-baled a lot of it on a neighbouring estate to here last year, 20t and acre of straw is a lot to get rid of. It actually isn't very muddy at all when it comes off the carrot beds so is able to be reused if baled.

Yes Joe SU , SV & SW are all Aberdeen registrations....the next two are the year / age and the last three letters are random...a bit like Sean's spelling really ;D ;D ;D ;D

Interesting John.. I wonder if the adtantages really justify the capital cost of the equipment though  :of  ??? .. bearing in mind the expensive of picking it up... turning it regularly (assuming you don't just leave it to 'compost' iteslf) .. and then re-distribution with more expensive kit ???

Presumably this chap does grass with his machine too so the extra work makes this side of the operation more cost effective. Would the chopper unit still be in situ or is it just picked up and composted as is? Also, is it blended with other materials to make the compost? Certainly seems a damn sight easier to take it away completely in this way that's for sure.
