The Valley Axeman's Major Marshall Mission

Day at the workshop yesterday, PTO pulled to do the seals to find the castle retaining nut only just hand tight.... Anyhow a full strip down and investigate further but couldn't see or find any excessive wear anywhere in the bearings or shafts due to the loose nut... So cleaned down and re sealed with new felt seal, double lipped seal and  O ring before setting aside and thinking about how to torque the nut back up to 150ftlbs..... I decided to nip back to work and see if I could fabricate a socket to fit the nut.... A couple of brews and a couple of hours later lump of thick walled 65mm tube and a couple if bits if 8mm plate were duly welded together with a 1/2" square hole filed in the cap plate to take the torque wrench. Back at the yard, and after a couple of Tunnocks I loctited the nut and pulled it up to 150ft... Shafts back in and selector checked for the 1000 shaft speed.... Hopefully get it slid back in the tractor over weekend and refilled with oil ready for a road test to see if she's now oil tight.

Another couple of hours yesterday whilst Gemma was putting in a Sunday shift at the hospital, got hydraulic unit back on and bolted up with a good smear of 510 between the mating surfaces, pressure and return pipes reconnected and a couple of new split pins in the clevis for the PTO and main lift selectors, bracket for the hydraulic couplings refit and the oil filtered and back end refilled.... Couple of Tunnocks before a Short road test but everything seems ok so far......once back at the yard couldn't help but get them In a line for a group photo. Next job be to clean up and refit the pick up hitch and arms and then can start putting inside the cab back together and tidying that up

He he.....FARTING POINT!

Super update :)

Wonder how long it would take for some one to spot that hahaha... Started life as an Earthing point badge off a bitumen tanker, and I couldn't help myself being a bit of a big kid 😉.... Cheers though Barry appreciate your comment 👍

Had a bit of a shuffle round yesterday morning to allow landlord a bit more room for some lambing space so took the Nuffield to a temporary storage facility up at my uncles for a couple of weeks but seeing as there was a shortage of drivers for a lift back home thought I'd take the Leyland and give her a run in the process.... Once back gave the 804 a run home for a brew to see if shes still oil tight once hot...... So far so good 😊

Well success.... Not a drop of oil from the recent works around the hydraulic unit and halfshaft seals, a slight weep from sealing washer and power steering pump but that be summat and nowt to sort..... So with a good bit of inspiration work this week got the pick up hitch and linkage refitted finishing off the back end to usable state again and work turned to cleaning the floor off and giving it a coat of satin black to allow time to dry before next weekend and wrestling the moulded floor mat back in 🙂

Had a leisurely tour of the valley again this morning which I like to call "road testing" and dropped in at John JMD briefly, seems ok so far she's not developed any new leaks since the surgery so fingers crossed all that's left to do now is a fresh bit of cladding for the right hand side inner wing, and then hopefully repaint the wheels olde English white..... Though Hamish didn't seem impressed to be in the 804....

Longtime no posting but here's a bit of a round up.....

Managed to get all 3 to Chipping Steam fair at end of May,  despite moving house the weekend before... not 100% happy with the Leyland on trailer duty, left hand brake issue on the Saturday morning that I could have done without, meanwhile still running a bit warm...

Then we had a tour over to Newby Hall with Models whilst trying to get my head round various issues and various other problems going on,

Then managed an afternoons fun quad trekking as part of one of my stag do's, organised by John JMD and despite the weather the mud made it a great afternoon.

A quick trip down to Northwich secured a pair of wheels and tyres for back of the 465 to replace the knackered cracked tyres and put it on a set of more age related wheels rather than the square cut centre type that are on at present...

Last weekend saw Longridge Ag Show and the Goosnargh Gathering, a special theme of Nuffield Leyland and Marshall, and after being asked by the tractor section stewards id managed to round a few up to come in total 40 booked in and i think 38 turned up including 9 100 series Marshalls... Which will almost be a tenth of the whole production run.....any how still not got to the bottom of the problems on the Leyland yet......

Great update thanks Paul. I really must make time to get to the Goosnargh Gathering next year, it isn't really that far from me.

Think next year it'll be a different theme Mike, maybe Ford or Massey, just so the folk don't get sick of seeing a load of harvest gold... Wouldn't see the issue with it myself mind but tractor steward thinks it's the way forward

Little update, new to me wheels cleaned up and given a first dose of old English white, bit more in keeping with the age of the 465 than the square cut 34s that on it at present... Shouldn't alter top end that much as 18.4/15x30s aren't far off a 16.9x34.... big question is what to put up front, 7.50x 16s or 10x16s

Another few hours up at the shed... 2nd coat on the wheels for the 465 and whilst they were drying off had an oil and filter change on the 804. Then thought I'd best try and crack the wheel nuts on the 465...all eventually submitted to defeat but put a bend in my 3/4 drive breaker bar in the process.... Anyhow given there been plenty of drying in the day wheels duly swapped and she now sitting on age related wheels at last... If I get chance for oil and filter swap and decide what I'm doing front tyre wise then she be good to go for a few more years yet

  • 2 weeks later...

After last Saturdays ""Stags Run " and developing a leak on the power steering... I decided to investigate further last night, but looks like it's coming out of back of pump somewhere between side of engine block and back of pump... It's only leaking when making pressure so it's either leaking from around the pressure relief valve or from the joint in the pump body itself... Hopefully get chance to get pump off tonight and investigate a bit further.......

Pump off, found a couple of loose bolts holding the 2 halves of the pump body together, so nipped up and back on the tractor, seems ok after bleeding the steering back up... Will know more after a proper road test. Then got some old English White on the new 7.50s for front of the 465..... Whilst having a tunnocks or two

Last outing with the 804 as a single man, trip to Chipping Agricultural Show, should have been on the freshly booted 465 but a slight scratch on my thumb that required a box of steri strips to stick back together... So thought the 804 was a better bet.. anyhow a few from today, the sun even shined on my dads final resting place whilst sat in arena in his full view during the parade

For richer for poorer,

For tractor and more................. er!

I'm no bard, it shows don't it 🙂

Getting hitched is gonna take on a whole new meaning for you, not just something to the back of a tractor

Good luck to you both on your special day

It's day I never thought would come but hey ho.... Less than 24hrs to go and still not written my speech yet.... Suppose I'd best think about it at least... Fingers crossed for a dry day tomorrow but we will just see what the day brings
