Oakley Farms Posted September 21, 2022 Author Share Posted September 21, 2022 September Update With harvest well and truly behind us now, attentions turned to autumn cultivations, Colin wizzing over the ground destined for winter wheat with the Catros and also the Horsch tiger too. With the odd wet day the combine has been washed off and put away, we have applied some slug pellets to the OSR which were being nibbled particularly at Bondip. Now looking at secondary cultivations this week as hope to start the drilling campaign next week. Oakley Farms Posted September 29, 2022 Author Share Posted September 29, 2022 Started the autumn drilling campaign this week, winter wheat has gone into Knott Oak, Bay Hill and Bondip North so far, good conditions. Had rain overnight so Bondip hasn’t been rolled which is a shame, its heavy ground a suffers from blackgrass so will be applying avadex once rolled. Got the Horstine applicator out the shed today to rig up. Tomorrow we are on hauling chicken litter from Newport Manor Farms which will be taken over to Bondip for spring spreading. Two big farms around here still send out Ford FW60s on secondary cultivations, cheap power. So many replacement options, only just started to look really, The Claas is very reliable and pre ad blue so has real grunt. Oakley Farms Posted October 8, 2022 Author Share Posted October 8, 2022 Since changing over to Deere earlier in the spring ad buying second hand, our local dealer has been pushing hard to get demos into us, aware of our ageing Claas they have brought over an 8rx for us to try out, looks very exciting. Since they are also Vaderstad dealers they managed to bring a new Spirit drill too, a slightly different concept, with the ability to pre place fertiliser ahead of the seed. The fertilizer option is interesting, I wonder given the price of the stuff if its a good idea or not to incorporate it onto the drill. On Youtube Farmer Ward has been waiting a long time for the arrival of his new 8RX 410, its now stuck at the docks in europe when it should be drilling wheat on his farm! CX820Joe Posted October 10, 2022 Share Posted October 10, 2022 I am pondering whether to get the Spirit drill as well, I bought the Kuhn Espro which is impressive but not diorama friendly as it doesn't fold up very well. Tried it out on both the Demo drill, our Rapid Drill and then the Horsch Tiger. We are probably thinking the Spirit drill won’t be for us though, it’s good points are the larger staggered wheels, large tank, ability to put fert ahead of the seed. What we didn’t so much like was the lack of direct drilling ability, coulters didn’t cope that well with trash and not sure it would cope with our heavy land at Bondip, but the dealer is going to bring it back in the spring for us to try Spring Beans on some clay. Simon is to sit down and work out if he can afford an 8rx and see what package is available. Having these demos allowed us to get the drilling into a corner and completed before this rain. We didn’t however manage to get all the pre emergence sprays on. We are now having a re organise in the yard, washing down kit and putting away, having a good tidy up. Collected the new grain bucket too Nice update, glad you demo went ok ,i now someone that is taking in a 8RX ,its 1 of 2 on this farm ,because the idler wheels in middle of tracks dont reach out to the sides the tracks a waring out uneven in a short space of time ,they are replacing it with a wheeled tractor ,the other 8RX they run is doing the same with the tracks but they are keeping it a bit longer 1 Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
Oakley Farms Posted November 7, 2022 Author Share Posted November 7, 2022 After waiting nearly a year our new Jcb Loadall arrived last week, just in time for wheat going out of store on November contracts, 9 lorry loads going out this coming week. Again thanks to Alan for the transport who looked to have an old Newholland TM150 on board heading back to Wales. Today (Monday) Colin has been hauling chicken litter out from a nearby poultry site along with John who has come in to help out with his Claas as we are currently down to one tractor - Colins 6195r is poorly with engine trouble. Oakley Farms Posted November 15, 2022 Author Share Posted November 15, 2022 There’s a combine shaped hole on the farm now. It was kept a secret but the machine we had last year was actually a development machine from Claas, one from each model was run for a season and then will be sent back to Germany and stripped apart for analysis, wear, problems etc. This all helps to to make constant changes and iron out anything for future models. Also having asked for our feedback too, something we suggested was a change of design for the end of the unloading auger as it came out in a wide pattern, fine for a chaser bin but not for trailers, especially with the speed. Look forward to our actual machine arriving next year. The John Deere 6195r is still having engine trouble which Deere can’t get to the bottom of, Simon has lost his patience and decided to go through the dealer so things are covered by warranty in the future, so it looks as if it won’t be coming back. The dealer has been very helpful and also keen to get the farm back after running Fendt for 7 years. An attractive package has been put together to start from fresh with warranty and servicing, something Simon likes as he now knows his costs and can budget for, we all learn from our mistakes.
