came out ona jcn today and had a very tidy ford 7840 go past hauling a less tidy 8ish ton collins silage trailer, loaded well above the sides barreling along, have to say i was amazed how the trailer was actually rolling, as both sides wheels were easily at 45 degrees to the road,  pretty much touching the chassis / mount point, but the actuall cradle they sat in was dead level to the chassis, bent the axels just a tad over the years i think

I have been reading a report in the morning paper today that environmental groups are planning to import Bison into Kent and introduce to them into a re-wilding scheme. Now, I am sure that this is all very laudable that they are trying to do something about climate change and based on how hot it is today, few would disagree that change is happening. There are only going to be 4 Bison, 1 male and 3 females, and they are expected to have an effect on the landscape around them purely due to the their presence.

Now correct me if I am wrong. Bison are ruminants and come from the same family as our domestic cattle who are apparently doing so much damage to the environment by their Methane emissions that we are all being told to change our diet and eat less meat. If Bison have the same digestive system as cows, then how is going to have more of them any different to having cows in the fields?

Yes, cows, (and Bison), produce manure and Methane as part of their digestive process and there is no doubt that having more Methane in the atmosphere is bad but, the other side of having herds of cows is that the manure that they produce makes organic fertilizer. If you had fewer cows then you would have less organic food and it would also be far more expensive as you would have to import fertilizer from elsewhere in the world.

Even the grass that the cows eat helps towards Carbon capture. A grass ley locks Carbon into the soil just by its very existence. If you then plough up that grassland to grow the vegetables that would be needed to feed the population on a Vegetarian/Vegan diet then you would be releasing vast amounts of Carbon back into the atmosphere, how is that going to help climate change?

Of course, you have to import the vegs that you need from South Africa and Israel, (why didn’t I think of that), so there would be no need to plough up all that grassland and we can re-wild it and have wild Bison chasing the tourists and goring them like they currently do in Yellowstone every year, simples!

Have you ever thought that the lunatics have taken over the asylum?

This article addresses a lot of your queries Mike.

It just seems ironic to me that the environmental lobby have been telling people that bovines are bad for the environment and then they use a similar species because they are good for the environment 😉

The scientists have identified the circumstances where bovines are bad for the environment and where they are good for the environment.

As Greta said to Parliament, we need to listen to the scientists and do what they say.
